SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University women's lacrosse team was in control from the onset in its afternoon battle with Eastern Oregon University on Saturday afternoon, cruising to a 19-7 victory over the Mountaineers.
"I'm very proud of how we played today," said head coach Kylie McMinn after the victory. "We utilized all of our players; every single person had a shining moment of success on the field today. Our chemistry on both sides of the field reflected the hard work we put in at practice all week. I'm looking forward to continuing our growth as a team together and hitting our peak at our final competition this season."
The Warriors' first goal came less than a minute and a half into the contest courtesy of Josie Brence, and the hometown squad led wire-to-wire from thereon out.
The first quarter gave the Navy and Gold a comfortable lead early, as four-straight goals from Sydney Davis in the final eight minutes of the period helped Corban take a commanding 7-2 advantage 15 minutes in.
After Payton Nuse spearheaded a suffocating defensive effort in the second quarter—during which the Warriors added six goals and blanked the Mountaineers—the Navy and Gold boasted an 11-goal lead at the midway mark. The two squads battled relatively evenly in the latter half, but Corban's hot start proved to be too much for the visitors to overcome.
Davis ended up with a season-high six goals in the victory, leading all performers in the category.
Defender Devyn Davis scored a career-high four goals in the win, making her presence felt offensively from Corban's defensive line.
Involved in seven goals altogether, Josie Brence earned a hat trick, while also assisting a game-high four scores on Saturday. Sarah Whitbey and Geneen Impreso each collected braces in the win, while Whitbey also dished out a trio of assists.
Corban's scoring was rounded out by a goal from freshman Aleana Godoy and a tally from Katie Beebe; it's a particularly special moment for Beebe, as her goal marked the first of her collegiate career.
In goal, Nuse ended the day with nine saves.
The Warriors (3-2) will round out their regular-season schedule on Saturday, April 9, hosting Multnomah University at 10 a.m. on campus.
