WILSONVILLE, Ore. – The Corban University softball team went toe-to-toe with No. 2-ranked College of Idaho on Saturday. In a doubleheader hosted at Wilsonville High School, the Yotes took game one by a 10-2 final score (five innings) and game two by a 9-0 tally (six innings).
"These were two hard losses today," said head coach Danyelle Huber. "The girls learned a lot and I'm confident they'll string some hits together tomorrow."
The high-powered Yotes offense got off to a strong start in game one, as both Kaily Christensen and Hattie Hruza blasted two-run bombs in the first inning. That gave C of I starter Hannah McNerney a comfortable early cushion to work with in the circle.
In the top of the third, the visitors put together a two-out rally to add to their lead, helped by back-to-back RBI doubles from Kaylee MacDannald and Alexis Navarrete.
In a controversial ending the to the top of the fourth, it looked as if the Yotes plated two more on a sacrifice fly and ensuing throwing error from the Warriors. Fortunately for the Navy and Gold, the runner who tagged and scored from third on the play left early, and she was later called out, keeping the score at 6-0.
The Warriors then got two of those back in their half inning in one swing of the bat, with Madison Wyllie crushing a two-run shot to dead center to put Corban on the board.
That momentum wouldn't last long, however, as the Yotes answered with four runs of their own in the top of the fifth, stretching the lead to eight and enacting the run rule after blanking the Navy and Gold in the latter half of the stanza.
In the second game of the day, the pitchers took center stage in the first half of the ballgame. Holly Gonzales and Katelyn Wilfert squared off in the back half of the twin bill, and both starters did well to keep their squads in it early.
The Yotes struck first, plating a pair of runs in the top of the second thanks to a two-run single from Haley Loffer. A Warrior miscue helped extend the inning earlier, meaning both of those runs were of the unearned variety.
College of Idaho nine hitter Hallie Holland tacked on another with a run-scoring base knock in the fourth, making it a 4-0 C of I lead after four complete.
Gonzales kept competing valiantly in the circle, navigating multiple Yote threats to keep the game close—unfortunately for the Warrior starter, the visiting offense would bust through in the top of the sixth, plating six to break it open.
Wilfert earned the win for C of I, going the distance in the six-inning affair to claim her fourth win of the year.
Adding frustration for the Navy and Gold was the fact that the Warriors actually matched the Yotes' hit tally in the loss, but they were unable to string together knocks to put together a rally.
Kaycee Arase (2-for-3) and Wyllie (2-for-3) led the squad with multi-hit efforts.
Corban (8-10, 3-2 CCC) and College of Idaho will be back at it tomorrow, concluding their four-game series with two more games at Wilsonville High School. Game one—which will be a Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) counting battle—will start at 10 a.m., with the non-conference series finale slated to begin immediately after its conclusion.
