SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University Women's Soccer team (4-1-3, 0-0-3) once again played 90 hard minutes of ball to end in a 0-0 tie, this time taking the (RV) College of Idaho Yotes (7-1-1, 3-0-1) the distance in an extremely hard-fought battle.
"I'm proud of this team's performance, this weekend was a good test for us, playing two tough opponents back-to-back," Corban Head Coach Whitney Pitalo said after her squad held yet another NAIA Top 25 team to a zero-goal effort.
"The team fought hard to the last minute today. It was unfortunate we couldn't convert one of our opportunities, but our defensive discipline earned us another shutout and our offensive transitions were strong. We will continue to improve our finishing in the final third," Pitalo continued.
The Warriors earned their third straight draw to begin the 2022 conference season, with scoreless draws becoming more common day-by-day due to the NAIA's decision to eliminate the overtime periods for non-post season games. The Corban Women's Soccer program forced three draws in total from the 2017 to 2021 seasons, and just netted the third of the 2022 season alone.
The Yotes and Warriors held nearly the same advantages throughout this afternoon's contest, with the team totals in shots, saves, and shots on goal all ending within a single stat of each other. The College of Idaho held the slight lead in shots and shots on goal with eight and six, respectively, while Corban correlatedly secured six saves to the Yotes' five.
While the Yotes held the clear advantage in the open field, finding multiple opportunities throughout the game by maneuvering through the Corban defensive unit, the Warriors managed many more set-piece tries. Corban found the corner kick spot four times this afternoon, while the College of Idaho failed to attempt a single corner kick.
Warriors' junior goalkeeper Makida Herbert earned her second straight shutout against an NAIA Top 25 team, earning all six of Corban's game-high in saves today. Yotes' starting goalkeeper Hannah Mcfadden tallied five saves in the weekend finale.
Corban junior forward Fatima Jimenez earned two shots today with one coming on goal, while defender Gianna Yslava and midfielder Lily Schlake tallied the same offensive stats for the Yotes.
The Corban Women's Soccer team begins an extremely long three-week road trip, with the first of those away matches beginning next Friday at Multnomah University in Portland, Oregon, with kickoff set for 11:30am PDT.
