PORTLAND, Ore. – A first set hiccup was quickly overwritten for the No. 5-ranked Corban University Volleyball team earlier this evening, with the Warriors (17-3, 11-1) dropping the first set 23-25 before three quick set wins to take a 3-1 match score on the road against Multnomah University, 25-16, 25-11, and 25-17.
"Tonight, we came out with an intense mind set, overthinking and pressing when we didn't need to," Warriors' head coach Kim McLain shared. "We realized we needed to settle in and focus on one point at a time and not look past any detail of the game in order to earn a win tonight."
In their first set loss to the Lions (2-10, 2-10) since the fall of 2016, Corban struggled to find their defensive rhythm and allowed 16 team kills to Multnomah in a forgettable first set for Warrior Nation. Two of the Lions' five blocking plays came in the opening set, with nine unforced errors coming off Corban touches.
The opening set loss clearly awakened the Warriors for the remainder of the match, with Multnomah falling behind early in the next three sets and never finding their momentum again to provide Corban with a road win to begin the second half of the Cascade Collegiate Conference schedule. The Warriors held the Lions to a negative attacking percentage over sets number two, three, and four, with the hometown team tallying only one more kill than errors committed in the contest.
Junior outside hitter Rylee Troutman garnered her usual double-double tonight in the form of a team-high 13 kills and 18 digs, while sophomore opposite hitter Makayla Roginski and junior middle blocker Allyson Reid added 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Freshman setter Nadeiah Howard commanded the Corban offense to a team-high 20 assists while logging 10 digs in the backcourt for her third double-double of the season.
Defensively for the Warriors, junior libero Marissa Uehara dug up 17 digs to lead the team, while freshman middle blocker Emma Bischoff combined for 11 block assists with Roginski. As a team, Corban out-blocked Multnomah 12 to 4 with a pair of solo stuffs coming from Reid.
Lions' outside hitter Maya Blake earned a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs, while outside hitter Aiyana Henderson dished out a game-high 27 dimes. Libero Lauren Porter secured a game-high 21 digs against the hard-hitting Corban lineup.
The No. 5-ranked Warriors will return to Portland tomorrow for their 5pm match with the Warner Pacific University Knights (1-18, 1-11) at the C.C. Perry Gym.
