Hodnett’s Career-High Not Enough as Mustangs Rout Warriors

KIRKLAND, Wash. – The Corban University Women's Basketball team fell victim to the most potent offense they've seen thus far in the 2023-24 season, as The Master's University ran amuck over the Warriors in their afternoon contest today in game one of the Northwest Classic, hosted by Northwest University at the Kristi Brodin Pavilion.

"We came out doing some very good things in the first quarter and forced them to switch into a zone, which we haven't seen much yet and really took us out of rhythm," Corban head coach Bill Pilgeram stated. "We ran into a very good offensive team and struggled to get stops consistently. We will get better from this game and bounce back tomorrow with another opportunity."

A tight first quarter of play was quickly erased in the second period when The Master's (3-0) doubled up on Corban (1-3), scoring 49 first half points to lead by over 20 points at the break. A once alert Warrior defense was broken down play-by-play by the Mustangs, as the GSAC program caught fire from the field by hitting nearly 60% of their field goals and 7-of-8 from the free throw line.

The Navy and Gold were also struggling to keep the ball safe on their own offensive possessions, as they handed the ball away ten times in the opening half compared to just three for TMU. Nearly half of the Warriors 28 points came from second chance opportunities, a skillset that the program has continued to grow since the beginning of the season.

The defensive woes continued for Corban throughout the third and fourth quarters, eventually falling to the undefeated Mustangs 105-62, with the visiting team converting on 58% of their field goals throughout the contest. Turnovers proved to be the costliest for Corban, as The Master's scored twenty more points thanks to Warrior miscues that eventually led to such a massive lead in the first contest of the Northwest Classic.

Junior forward Madison Hodnett tied her career-high scoring mark this evening with 17 points against TMU, adding nine rebounds and the only block of the afternoon for either team. A pair of nine-point performances from senior guard Maddie Godwin and freshman guard Autumn Agnew helped keep the Warriors eligible for a win throughout the first half.

Five different Mustangs were in double-digit scoring this afternoon in Kirkland, led by guard Marin Lenz and her 25 points. Forward Lexi Hernandez was the only other player close to a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds, while guard Nicole Chung added 17 points.

Corban will continue the Northwest Classic tomorrow at 2pm, as the Warriors will battle Rocky Mountain College (3-0) before heading back down the I-5 corridor to Salem.
