ASHLAND, Ore. – The deepest goal of the season allowed the Corban University Women's Soccer team to earn a hard-fought draw on the road against the RV Southern Oregon University Raiders, as the Warriors stayed undefeated in conference play with a 1-1 decision at Raider Stadium earlier today.
"Leaving today's game with a point is something our team is grateful for," Warriors' head coach Travez Whyte stated. "Our ladies are on the right track, and we will continue to play hard for each other and to honor God with our words, thoughts, and actions. Tomorrow is another day to do that."
After connecting on a deep shot last week against Bushnell, junior forward Kelli Huskic repeated today to open the scoring between the Warriors (3-2-3, 1-0-1) and Raiders (4-3-2, 1-0-2). After a misplay by Southern Oregon's goalkeeper, the ball bounded to Huskic and provided her with an open net opportunity as the goalie attempted to scramble back between the posts. From roughly thirty-seven yards out, Huskic delivered to provide the Navy and Gold with an early lead.
The first half was primarily dominated by Corban, with the Warriors taking seven more shots than the Raiders. Huskic led all student-athletes with two shots, one of which scored the lone goal of the half while the other was saved by Southern Oregon's goalkeeper Ashlynn Hernandez.
Despite being held to a low shot total and no goals on their home field through sixty minutes of play, the Raiders finally broke through in the 62nd minute of today's match. With a free kick opportunity just inside Warrior territory, Southern Oregon loaded the penalty box and sent the cross all the way from the midfield line. After a quick touch from defender Miller Bertani, midfielder Malaika Quigley got off a shot opportunity from close range that found the back of the net and knotted this contest at one goal apiece.
The Warriors stayed aggressive throughout the remainder of the contest, taking double the number of shots (16-8) over the entirety of the match, but were unable to break the tie and had to settle for a 1-1 draw against an NAIA Top 25 opponent. Known for being consistent on the field, Southern Oregon struggled to find their identity today in their conference home opener, snapping their win streak against Corban but staying out of the loss column.
Junior midfielder Alysia Alvarado joined Huskic for the game-high mark in shot this afternoon, with each of them taking four against Hernandez. Senior goalkeeper Makida Herbert earned the draw result after allowing a single goal and hauling in a trio of saves for the Warriors.
Quigley led the home team in shots with three today, registering half of the team's shots on goal as well. Hernandez had just two saves but her 23rd minute misplay resulted in a tie for the Roseville junior.
The final leg of their trip to southern Oregon will take place tomorrow at 2:30pm, as the Oregon Tech Owls (2-3-1, 1-2-0) will host the Warriors before Corban returns home for a three-week homestand.
