Warriors Stay Undefeated in Conference Play, Complete Second Half Comeback Against Argos

SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University Women's Soccer team exploded out of the halftime break to secure a home victory over the University of Providence, defeating the Argos 3-1 thanks to three goals in a matter of eight minutes from three different players.

"We played like a team today and I'm proud of that," Corban head coach Travez Whyte shared. "The first half provided lots of opportunities we had missed out on. But in the second half, our ladies became more clinical to get the result we wanted. Each player was playing for each other, and I can't ask for more than that. However, we still have more work to do this weekend and we are grateful for the opportunity."

Despite the contest ending in such dominant fashion by the Warriors (4-2-4, 2-0-2), it was the Argos who managed to take the first lead of the contest, as midfielder Dani Waialeale connected on a header attempt via a corner kick by defender Julia Tilton that flew over everyone in the immediate area and into the back of the net.

The offensive stutter wouldn't last much longer as the second half began, with the Warriors scoring their first goal of the contest off the foot of sophomore forward Carley Diaz, who found a seam in the Argos' defensive line and collected a beautifully placed pass by junior forward Kelli Huskic to slip the ball past the diving arms of goalkeeper Maya Amundson and knot this match a goal apiece.

Two minutes and ten seconds later, Huskic scored her own goal by redirecting a cross in front of the goal by junior defender Caterina La Manna, allowing Corban to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead in a matter of minutes. The third and final goal of the match for the Navy and Gold came in the 56th minute when Diaz slipped a pass by multiple Providence defenders, allowing a wide open shot eight feet away from the net by the Warriors' leading goal scorer, junior midfielder Alysia Alvarado.

The Warriors would go on to outshoot the Argos 27-4 in the contest, taking ten more shots on goal and thus a 3-1 victory on the scoreboard. Alvarado led the field with six shots, one of which found pay dirt and two more which were deflected by the Argos' goalie. Both Huskic and Diaz tallied single goal/assist afternoons, while Alvarado grew her team leading goal mark to five on the season.

Senior goalkeeper Makida Herbert earned her fourth win of the season by allowing one goal and nabbing a single save. With roughly twenty minutes left in the contest, freshman goalkeeper Ava Hayes made her collegiate debut to relieve Herbert, keeping the Argos off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest.

The Warriors will be back in action tomorrow afternoon with the Carroll College Saints (6-0-2, 3-0-1) coming to town for a 3pm PT kickoff.
