SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University Women's Basketball team avenged their 21-point road loss to Warner Pacific University to open conference play with their most dominant win thus far this season, as the Warriors secured an 85-48 victory on Tim Hills Court earlier this evening. The win snaps a five-game skid for Corban and breaks a three-way tie in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) standings to find themselves back in the hunt for a playoff seed.
"It was great to see the shots go in and the confidence that we played with tonight," said Warriors' head coach Bill Pilgeram. "The consistency at both ends of the court and contributions by everyone was outstanding, it's hard to pick just one player or aspect of the game that went well for us when everyone was doing their job at a high level."
It was the Knights (6-11, 4-9) who took control of the contest in the opening period over the Warriors (6-13, 5-8), holding on for a 16-15 advantage in what appeared to be a potential barn burner in the C.E. Jeffers Sport Center earlier tonight. However, the Corban defense came to play in the second quarter, holding Warner Pacific to just seven team points while the offense did their part and dropped 25 points to flip the scoreboard in a massive way and led 40-23 at the halftime break.
The Warriors kept piling on the points throughout the second half, specifically off Warner Pac turnovers and would eventually post a 21-2 advantage in points scored off miscues for the entire contest. For the second time this season, the Knights dominated the offensive rebounds (24 to 10) to provide themselves with plenty of second chance point opportunities but were unable to find the bottom of the basket on a majority of their attempts with just a 23.9% field goal percentage on the day.
Corban outscored WPU 45-25 for the remainder of the game to earn the statement win they desperately needed as they continue making their push up the CCC standings thanks to one of their best all-around performances of the year by shooting 49.3% from the field and allowing a mere 23.9% field goal percentage to the Knights. They'll take the 37-point win to the film room and see what they can continue improving upon as the postseason grows closer every day.
Senior guard Maddie Godwin (23 points) and freshman guard Autumn Agnew (22 points) were in perfect sync this evening to post the two highest scoring finishes of the day, as the duo combined for nearly half of the team's total points alongside three assists and two steals apiece. A 10-point and nine-rebound performance by junior forward Madison Hodnett nearly saw the Nampa, Idaho native secure a double-double in just 15 minutes of play.
Guards Teirra Hicks and Serena Sanchez each scored 10 points apiece in the Knights' efforts to lead the program offensively, while guard McKeeley Tonkin added five points and six rebounds. Forward Emily Brown was held scoreless but snagged a team-high seven boards.
Corban women's basketball returns to Tim Hills Court tomorrow afternoon for a 3pm tipoff against the Multnomah Lions (5-14, 2-11) looking for the weekend sweep over the Portland schools.
