SALEM, Ore. – In their final regular season home matchup this season, the Corban University Women's Basketball team honored their senior student-athletes before the scheduled game with No. 22-ranked Southern Oregon University, where the Raiders took an 81-49 decision to help set themselves up for a possible conference title next weekend. The Warriors honored five different seniors tonight, including Neha Joseph, Rebekah Everest, Gemma LaVergne, Maddie Godwin, and Kirsten Koehnke.
"It wasn't the result we wanted, but nothing can diminish the impact this group of seniors have had on this program and how well they represent Corban University," Warriors' head coach Bill Pilgeram stated when asked to highlight his five graduating seniors. "We will miss their presence in the future at games here on Tim Hills Court. Luckily, we have another week on the road to establish playoff position and finish our season strong."
With an opportunity to host the game that will crown a conference regular season championship next weekend on their home court, the No. 22-ranked Raiders (22-4, 18-2) didn't allow the senior day sympathy of the Warriors (8-18, 7-13) to distract them from running away with their eight-consecutive road win in conference play.
Despite Corban initially taking a 2-0 lead on the third possession of the contest, Southern Oregon would go on to outscore the Warriors 25-8 through the remainder of the opening period en route to a 32-point win in Salem. SOU stretched their lead to as many as 36 points through the second half, dominating every facet of the game aside from a narrow 20-18 advantage for the Warriors in the paint.
The lone Warrior in double-digits this afternoon was redshirt sophomore guard Tori Younker, who came off the bench to score 10 points in 15 minutes of action. The senior crew of Godwin, Everest, LaVergne, and Koehnke combined for 15 points, with junior forward Madison Hodnett hauling in a team-high six rebounds and swatted a game-high three blocks.
The Raiders shot a respectable 46% from the field and connected on 14 of their 33 attempts from beyond the arc, with guard Sierra Scheppele leading the three-point barrage with nearly half of her team's long-ball field goals (6-for-7) and 20 total points. Guard Meghan McIntyre added 12 points and five assists, while forward Clara Robbins brought down ten boards for Southern Oregon.
Corban women's basketball will continue their hunt for a postseason bid next weekend on the road in the final weekend of regular season contests, as they'll make their first stops in La Grande to battle Eastern Oregon University (18-6, 14-6) on Friday at 5:30pm.
