EUGENE, Ore. – The magic number has been dropped to just a single game after the No. 2-ranked Corban University Beach Volleyball team secured a pair of dual wins this afternoon at the penultimate conference tournament hosted by Bushnell University, where the Warriors handed another 3-2 loss to RV College of Idaho before sweeping the Beacons 5-0 to put themselves in an comfortable position heading into their final three Cascade Collegiate Conference matches on their home courts.
"Today took a full team effort and it was great to see everyone step up and get some wins," Corban head coach Dan Stephens stated earlier this evening. "We had some alternates step into positions and get wins, which was a big reason for our success, and it was rewarding to see for them. We have three more conference matchups this weekend and we will need that same team effort to come out on top."
Just like in their opening matchup with the Yotes (5-6, 5-5) one week ago, the Warriors (13-2, 9-0) were pushed to their limits by the first-year program with two of the five pairs going the distance, but a quick 2-0 advantage thanks to victories in the twos and fours allowed the Warriors to relax after an injury in the second set of the third pairing forced Coach Stephens and his team to forfeit the pair.
A clean 21-12 and 21-18 sweep in the fifth pair by redshirt sophomore Angela Stover and freshman Cammie Masanda allowed the Navy and Gold to secure the pair and stay undefeated in conference play this season.
In their fourth and final head-to-head matchup with Bushnell (5-16, 3-8) this regular season, the Warriors nearly clinched their second clean sweep of the Beacons this calendar year by only dropping a single set in the fourth overall pairs. After allowing their Bushnell counterparts to force a third set, redshirt freshman Erin Scott and freshman Allyson Reid took the winner-take-all set 15-13 to clinch a 2-0 pair lead heading into the last three pairs of the day.
Three-straight sweeps by the fives, ones, and threes, in that order, saw the Navy and Gold snag their fifth sweep of the season to account for nearly half of their wins this year, setting up a memorable opportunity over the next two days on Corban's campus in front of their home fans. They'll host the final conference tournament of the 2024 season tomorrow while also preparing to clash with C of I in a makeup dual from the first CCC tourney on Sunday morning.
