COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – The Corban University Women's Basketball team had one of their best all-around performances of the 2024-25 season thus far today against the Walla Walla University Wolves, as they kicked off the weekend with a 77-49 result on the road in southeastern Washington to kick their losing skid and find their sixth win of the year.
"Today we did a great job at pushing the tempo and having crisp actions on the offensive end," Corban head coach Kylie Frizell explained earlier this afternoon. "It was really cool to be able to have everyone play and score at least once."
After stalling offensively late last weekend in their most recent outing against Eastern Oregon University, the Warriors (6-9, 4-5) opened today's contest against Walla Walla (4-11, 1-8) by doubling up the Wolves on their home court through the first period, outscoring the host team 24-12 through ten minutes of action.
Their scoring spree continued into the second quarter of play with another 21 points to finish the opening half with a commanding 14-point lead over the Wolves, who did manage to outscore their first quarter output to hang with the Navy and Gold for a majority of the period, pulling to within just two possessions on a handful of occasions before the Corban offense roared back to life. While Walla Walla chose to live-and-die by the three-point arc, the Warriors were forcing the ball into the paint and finding success both from senior forward Madison Hodnett and her 12 first half points, along with stretching the court to hit their own jumpers late in the shot clock window and even off a plethora of offensive rebounds.
Corban scored the first six points of the second half to reach the 20-point mark and never looked back in an impressive defensive period for the Warriors, as they held the Wolves to just seven points in the third quarter and surrendered only 11 in the fourth to clinch every single quarter for a nearly 30-point road win in Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play. There wasn't a single statistical team category that the Navy and Gold didn't dominate in today's matchup, as they outrebounded Walla Walla 48-27 and more impressively a 17-0 advantage in second chance points scored while limiting their miscues on the defensive end via an 18-6 margin in points off turnovers.
Hodnett finished her afternoon with a game-high 16 points and nine rebounds in only 17 minutes played in the post, while fellow starter and redshirt sophomore guard Jenna Albrecht added ten points and hauled in eight boards on the weakside glass with a game-high three steals defensively. Sophomore guard Tayla Yost and junior forward Sevennah Van De Riet were exceptional off the bench today for Coach Frizell, as they scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, while each grabbing six boards with five combined offensive rebounds.
The Wolves were led by guard Jaylo Bello and her team-best 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting, while forward Chariah Daniels scored six points and was the game-high rebounder and assister with ten boards and four dimes. Forward Natalee Trevino pitched in 11 points, five boards, and tied Albrecht for the game-high in steals.
A nationally ranked opponent awaits the Corban women's basketball team tomorrow evening in Lewiston, as No. 13-ranked Lewis-Clark State College (12-2, 6-2) will host the first Battle of the Warriors of 2025 at 4pm.
