Weathered Warriors Suffer Conference Playoff Race Setback to Knights

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Corban University Men's Basketball team saw a three-game winning streak on the season and four-straight wins against Warner Pacific University snapped tonight via a struggling second half performance on both their offensive and defensive sides of the court, as the Knights' offense ran wild to score 55 points and stretch their three-point halftime lead into an 88-66 home victory over the Warriors. With the loss, the Navy and Gold fall into a tie for third place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) alongside No. 21-ranked Lewis-Clark State College, who currently holds the tiebreaker due to their head-to-head result earlier this month with eight games remaining in both squads' schedules, while Warner Pac moves into a tie for the final postseason spot with Bushnell University, who they managed to split the season series with as well last night via a gritty 78-76 victory.

With a key starter sitting out of tonight's CCC matchup due to injury, the Warriors' (12-8, 10-4) rotation was in disarray from the opening tip and never fully looked comfortable on Bart Valentine Court, eventually resulting in the lopsided road loss just one day removed from a come-from-behind overtime victory over Multnomah to sweep the Lions for the third-straight season. Corban's largest lead of the entire contest came with nine minutes remaining in the first half at 18-12, yet the Knights (10-9, 5-9) rallied to outscore the Navy and Gold 21-12 for the remainder of the opening half and lead by three at the break.

Warner Pac needed just five minutes of clock time to start the second half to establish a double-digit lead and never looked back in their home gymnasium, as the Corban offense couldn't find a bucket among multiple scoring streaks by the Knights who would sub in their reserves with under four minutes remaining and lock up their biggest resume win thus far of the 2024-25 season.

Warriors' leading scorer junior Spivey Word finished his evening with another 18 points along with three rebounds and a pair of assists, while junior guard Payton Meyers added 13 points off the bench. Senior guard Luc Krystkowiak had the most well-balanced performance for Corban men's basketball with 11 points alongside seven boards.

The Knights' secured a breakout performance by sixth man guard Tre'von Cason who avenged his first outing against Corban in Salem this past December with a game-high 25 points tonight, hauling in seven rebounds along the way for a near double-double. Starting forwards Jurrien Sparks and Terrin Dickey pitched in 13 and 12 points, respectively.

The Warriors head home for a pair of contests on their home court next Friday and Saturday, beginning with Eastern Oregon University (13-7, 8-6) at 7:30pm on Friday evening with an opportunity to avenge one of their few CCC losses to the Mountaineers in 2024-25.
