SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University Women's Basketball hosted their annual Field Trip Game where they welcomed hundreds of local elementary school students to attend their contest with RV Lewis-Clark State College, where the visiting Warriors held the upper hand for the entire afternoon matchup en route to a 91-51 victory and completed a season sweep of the Navy and Gold in the process.
"LC State is a really good team that does a great job at pressuring the ball in their zone," detailed Corban head coach Kylie Frizell. "Unfortunately, shots didn't fall quite like we wanted them to. I'm proud of this group to continue fighting through and we look forward to tomorrow to end our regular season well!"
A consistent onslaught of fast-paced offensive pressure allowed LC State (22-5, 16-5) to cruise to the 40-point road win over Corban (10-17, 8-13) despite fighting the nearly 400 elementary school students for even the slightest bit of communication throughout the entire contest, as the gym was electric and boisterous for the entire forty minutes of regulation. The visiting Warriors also took advantage of their full court press on defense to force 22 Navy and Gold turnovers, resulting in 28 points while adding 26 more on their 21 offensive rebounds.
While Corban was able to keep pace with Lewis-Clark State through the opening 11 minutes into the second quarter when they cut their deficit to two possessions, LC State roared back to form a 15-point halftime lead and utilized 30 and 25-point third and fourth quarters, respectively, to keep the hometown Warriors searching for answers.
Four different Corban student-athletes scored seven or more points offensively for the Navy and Gold, led by sophomore guard Lizzy Bennett and redshirt junior guard Tori Younker who had eight points apiece. Senior forward Madison Hodnett collected six rebounds and swatted four LC State shots while scoring seven points herself.
A quintet of Lewis-Clark State players scored in double-figures this afternoon at the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center, with guard Ellie Sander paving the way with a game-high 17 points and three steals. Fellow guard Sitara Byrd added 15 points with three rebounds, while forward Mataya Green was the closest student-athlete to a double-double with 12 points and eight boards.
Corban women's basketball will hold their Senior Day celebration tomorrow evening at 6:45pm before their 7pm contest with Walla Walla University (7-20, 4-17), where they will honor four senior student-athletes in their final regular season home game on Tim Hills Court.
