SALEM, Ore. – Despite not shooting the ball particularly well tonight, the No. 18-ranked Corban University Women's Basketball program picked a 74-67 Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) victory over Northwest University, as the Warriors were perfect from the free throw line and converted on their opportunities down the stretch to fend off the upset-minded Eagles.
"Tonight was a game of runs where we couldn't find our flow consistently," shared Corban head coach Kylie Frizell earlier tonight. "Mandie was so solid for us on both sides of the ball that helped us secure the win. We are going to reset tomorrow as we take on Evergreen."
Multiple double-digit leads were cut back down by the visiting Eagles (4-9, 0-5) time and time again this evening at the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center, with the Warriors' (11-2, 4-1) offense cooling off at the most inopportune times to provide NU with multiple opportunities to snag their first CCC victory.
However, even though Northwest was able to flip a 14-point deficit into a three-point lead with a minute to play in the third quarter, the Navy and Gold defense rose to the occasion in the fourth and final period, holding the Eagles to a game-low 11 points on 21% shooting from the field. Ultimately, big offensive quarters for the Warriors in the first (24-13) and Northwest in the third (26-18), canceled each other out, and the Navy and Gold were able to find the bottom of the net through the final minutes of regulation for the seven-point home victory.
Corban senior guard Mandie Jensen did a little of everything tonight for the No. 18-raned Corban women's basketball squad in 21 minutes off the bench, scoring 11 points to represent one of five Warriors in double-digit scoring while hauling in a game-high eight rebounds and dishing out the game-high assist mark with seven dimes, nearing the triple-double mark for the first time in her collegiate career. Redshirt sophomore guard Jersey Huerta led all scorers with 17 points along with five rebounds, while junior guard Tayla Yost, redshirt junior guard Jenna Albrecht, and graduate student Emilia Bishop tacked on 13, 12, and 11 points, respectively.
The Eagles finished their strong road effort with eight student-athletes scoring at least five points, led by guard Kaleah Medeiros and her 12 points. Guard Jersey McGehee and forward Ellie DeWaard pitched in ten points, seven rebounds, and two assists apiece.
Tomorrow afternoon, the Warriors will be back on Tim Hills Court hosting The Evergreen State College Geoducks (0-8, 0-5) for a 3pm tipoff.
