Huerta, McCauley Dominate Geoducks as No. 22 Warriors Inch Closer to Top Spot in CCC Standings

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Following a back-and-forth opening period, the No. 22-ranked Corban University Women's Basketball team unloaded from deep for a 36-point second quarter while holding The Evergreen State College Geoducks to just nine total points on offense to cruise into a 44-point road win in Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play, 102-58, with both a seasoned veteran and true freshman leading the way offensively.

"I'm really proud of our efforts on all fronts tonight," expressed Warriors' head coach Kylie Frizell shortly following their result in western Washington. "We started off kind of slow in the first quarter even though we were taking good shots. Shooting with confidence is key for us moving forward. Having twenty-four assists on thirty-seven made field goals is great as well. I'm also pleased with our defensive pressure as that has been key for us in practice this week, leading to them shooting 35% with 26 turnovers."

The Navy and Gold (17-4, 10-3) picked up their tenth win in conference action for the first time since the 2019-20 season in dominant fashion, shaking off an 18-13 start by outscoring the Geoducks (0-16, 0-13) 84-45 the remainder of the contest, finishing just under 50% from the floor offensively while shooting over 40% from beyond the three-point arc for a seventh time this year alone.

A 12-0 run for the Dubs to begin the second quarter allowed them to turn on the cruise control and allow the entire bench to stretch their legs inside the Costantino Recreation Center on the campus of Evergreen State, as eleven different Warriors scored at least two points while four finished in double-digits. The hot-handed Corban offense utilized their depth to increase their lead steadily over the second half, with sophomore guard Nina Peterson dropping a casual season-best 12 points on four three-pointers.

The conference's highest scoring offense continues to be led by the CCC's highest scoring student-athlete, as redshirt sophomore guard Jersey Huerta tallied 31 points in 26 minutes played today against Evergreen, shooting 12-for-20 from the field and increasing her season average to just under 20 points per game. In addition to her scoring prowess, Huerta hauled in eight rebounds, swiped six steals, and dealt out four assists along the way tonight.

Joining Huerta in the Warriors' offensive showcase was true freshman guard Izzy McCauley, who splashed five triples en route to 17 points off the bench, finishing over 50% from the field as well. With tonight's performance, McCauley jumped into the top ten across the conference in three-point percentage, as she's ranked ninth behind teammate and redshirt junior guard Jenna Albrecht, who added 11 points and three steals in today's contest. Graduate student center Emilia Bishop played the role of distributor today from the post, dishing out a game-high five assists while scoring nine points herself.

The Geoducks were led in scoring by forward Bayleigh Harder's 16 points with a game-high five blocked shots, while guard Jenna Glenzel scored 13 points and added ten boards for a double-double effort. Glenzel was one steal behind Huerta with five picked pockets, yet committed eight turnovers herself to lead all players.

Corban women's basketball will travel slightly further north up the I-5 interstate tomorrow for a 3pm tipoff with Northwest University (7-14, 3-10) inside the Kristi Brodin Pavilion.
