OREGON CITY, Ore. – The Corban University men's golf team put together an impressive opening round on Friday at the CU Warrior Invite, posting a tournament-best team score of 300 to claim the day-one lead at Stone Creek Golf Course.
"Our men jumped out to a strong lead thanks to Owen's 90-yard backspin eagle on hole seven to finish at -1 for the day, and the sharp play from David and Isaac shooting even par," explained Corban head coach Charlie Marshall. "Our B-team had strong results as well from Brock, Colby, and Brendan, but will need some extra help tomorrow to catch the Warner Pac teams. Our highlight of the day was gathering afterwards with our Christian friends from WPU for pizza and fellowship."
The Warriors enter the final round with a 12-stroke advantage over Warner Pacific University's "A" squad, which sits second after carding a 312. Warner Pacific's "B" team rounds out the top three teams at 314, while Corban's reserve squad posted a 324 in the opening round.
Corban's A-squad lineup was paced by a trio of standouts. Junior Owen Heath delivered another strong performance for the Navy and Gold, carding a 71 to sit atop the individual leaderboard after 18 holes. Senior David Harvey and sophomore Isaac Laro each fired even-par 72s, putting the duo in a share of second place individually and just two strokes off the tournament lead. Warner Pacific's Orlando Chiquiti holds the individual lead for his program after an opening-round 74.
Redshirt freshman Cavan Visser added an 85, while freshman Casyn Simmons rounded out the Corban scoring group with an 86 as the Warriors established a sizable lead heading into the tournament finale.
Corban's reserve team also turned in several strong rounds during Friday's action. Redshirt senior Brock Nelson led the "B" squad with a 79, while freshman Colby Lerten was close behind at 80. Sophomore Brendan Barbeau added an 81, freshman Owen Deese shot 84, and redshirt freshman Lucas Savage recorded a 90.
The Warriors will return to Stone Creek Golf Course tomorrow morning looking to maintain their lead and secure the team title while Harvey, Laro, and Heath chase individual medalist honors.
