EUGENE, Ore. – On a day when Eugene Country Club offered little room for error, the Corban University men's golf team found its advantage by limiting the damage. Behind senior David Harvey's tournament-leading 73 and a pair of top-five performances from senior Owen Heath and freshman Casyn Simmons, the Warriors finished Monday's opening round of the Tall Timber Invitational atop the leaderboard. Corban's 304 (+16) established a three-stroke lead over host Bushnell University, putting both the team championship and individual medalist honors within reach entering Tuesday's final round.
"Even though the course was set up tough, our guys played extremely well to give us a three-shot lead," Corban head coach Charlie Marshall said. "David is leading the pack with a 73 and Owen and Casyn tied for fifth. We're looking forward to extending our lead tomorrow."
The par-72, 6,854-yard course presented a demanding opening assignment, with the field averaging 81.80 strokes for the round. No golfer finished at even par or better, but Harvey came closest. His one-over-par effort gave him a two-stroke advantage over Bushnell's Lincoln Wiedenmann and Connor Cameron and Simpson University's Karsten Hansen, who shared second place at 75 (+3).
Harvey's work on the par 4s separated him from the field. He played those holes at one under par, the best mark of any competitor, while collecting 13 pars throughout the round. Coming off his individual championship at the CU Warrior Classic earlier this month, the senior again positioned himself as the golfer to catch.
Corban's lead, however, depended on more than its front-runner. Heath and Simmons each carded a 76 (+4) to join Southern Oregon University's Ryder Jacox in a tie for fifth, giving the Warriors three golfers among the top seven competitors.
The two arrived at matching scores through different strengths. Heath matched Harvey with 13 pars, providing another steady round near the top of the lineup. Simmons generated more scoring opportunities, tying for the field lead with four birdies. He also shared the best par-3 performance at even par and played the par 5s at one under, helping Corban keep its closest challengers behind it.
Sophomore Isaac Laro completed the Warriors' counting scores with a 79 (+7), placing him in a tie for 15th. Fellow sophomore Brendan Barbeau rounded out the five-player lineup with an 82 (+10), tying for 26th.
Across that lineup, Corban recorded just five double bogeys or worse, the fewest among the eight team entries. The Warriors also led the field in par-4 scoring with a 4.32 average and tied for the best par-5 average at 5.05. Those advantages helped offset Bushnell's slight edges in birdies and pars, leaving the hosts at 307 (+19).
Southern Oregon held third at 314 (+26), followed by Walla Walla University at 319 (+31). Simpson and Bushnell's reserve squad shared fifth at 321 (+33), while Southern Oregon's reserve team stood seventh at 322 (+34). College of Idaho occupied eighth place.
Three additional Warriors competed as individuals. Freshman Rane Divers finished the opening round tied for 30th with an 83 (+11), redshirt freshman Cavan Visser tied for 40th at 86 (+14), and freshman Colby Lerten tied for 47th at 91 (+19).
The Warriors return Tuesday with a lead to protect and little separation from their nearest challenger. Another disciplined round could turn Monday's strong start into a team championship, while Harvey, Heath, and Simmons remain positioned to contend for individual honors. Round two will take place at Tokatee Golf Club in Blue River, about an hour east from where they concluded their opening round.
