REDDING, Calif. – Back-to-back 8-0 run-rule losses for the Corban University Softball program has the Warriors heading back to Salem searching for answers with the start of Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play right around the corner, as Arizona Christian University and Westcliff University each picked up their second wins of the weekend at the Redding Sports Park over the Navy and Gold.
"Mckenna continued to play outstandingly, and Shelby had a strong collegiate opening weekend as well," Corban head coach Jeff Covalt explained. "We have good notes to work on as we get ready to start conference play with a challenging weekend, but it was good to get our underclassmen ready to play in a difficult conference."
Corban (0-6) dropped their fifth and sixth games to open the season in shutout fashion, as they placed several runners in scoring position but were unable to find the base hit that they needed to drive runs across home plate against the Firestorm (8-5) and Westcliff Warriors (10-4). The Navy and Gold pitching staff surrendered 16 runs across 11.0 innings, only 11 of which were earned due to untimely fielding errors that extended long innings and at-bats.
Both Arizona Christian and Westcliff demonstrated that the only way to keep sophomore first baseman Mckenna Hanson from punishing them at the plate was by pitching around her, as she logged just one at-bat in the opener against ACU due to walks and finished game two against Westcliff 2-for-3 to represent the only multi-hit outing of the day for a member of the Navy and Gold.
The Warriors will open CCC action on their own home field this upcoming weekend, doubling as their home opener when they welcome the RV Thunderbirds of the University of British Columbia (8-6, 0-0) for 1pm and 3pm start times on Friday, February 27th.
