Warriors Fall to Defending Champs George Fox

BOX SCORE

SALEM, Ore.
– Sophomore Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) and junior Monique Tribble (Coquille, Ore.) combined to score 20 points and grab eight rebounds, but it was not enough as Corban's women's basketball team dropped its home opener to the defending NCAA Division III champions and No. 4-ranked George Fox, 74-41, Tuesday night inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

With the loss, Corban falls to 0-3 on its young season. Meanwhile, George Fox opens the defense of its title at 1-0 and extends its winning streak to 33 straight games.

Steigleman was 4-for-12 from the field that included a pair of three-pointers en route to scoring a team-high 12 points, while Tribble connected on 3-of-9 shots and was 2-for-4 from the free throw line for a total of eight points.

In the opening half, Tribble knotted the game at 2-all via a jumper in the paint with 17:57 showing on the clock. Over the next six-plus minutes, George Fox scored 15 unanswered points and took a 17-2 lead with Keisha Gordon scoring 11 of the Bruins' points during the run before Corban ended it via a Steigleman jumper with 12:08 remaining. The host Warriors would score eight points in just over three minutes to cut George Fox's lead to 10 points (20-10) following back-to-back free throws by Steigleman with 8:56 left in the opening half. Unfortunately, Corban would not score for the remainder of the first half as George Fox ended the opening twenty minutes on a 13-0 run with Samantha Simmons tallying six points. George Fox would go into halftime with a 23-point lead (33-10), as the visiting Bruins shot 11-for-34 (32.4%) compared to Corban's 3-for-24 (12.5%) showing over the opening twenty minutes.

The second half would be a different story for Corban, as the Warriors scored 31 points on 10-for-33 (30.3%) shooting. Unfortunately, George Fox's 20-plus point lead throughout the second half was too much as Corban could only get as close as 17 points (35-18) following a Tribble jumper with 16:59 left. The visiting Bruins would push their lead to as much as 33 points (66-33) after back-to-back free throws by Bree Rinehart-Young with just over four minutes on the clock. Despite both teams scoring eight points over the final four-plus minutes, Corban could not get any closer with the final points coming from freshman Terra Rust (Adrian, Ore.) via a three-pointer and fellow freshman Melissa Jones (Klamath Falls, Ore.) off a jumper in the paint for the final margin of 74-41.

Besides Steigleman and Tribble's point totals, junior Ashlee Jensen (Yuba City, Calif.) and freshman Tess Bennett (Sutherlin, Ore.) each tallied four points. Meanwhile, junior Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.) grabbed a team-leading five rebounds to go along with Steigleman's four-rebound, three-assist performance and Tribble's four-rebound, two-steal showing.

George Fox was led by Gordon's game-high 22 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the field that included a 4-for-6 performance from behind the three-point line. Lindsay Keener added 11 points, while Simmons and Carrie Myers tallied eight and six points respectively. On the boards, Gordon and Arianna Mohsenian grabbed a game-high nine rebounds each to go along with Keener's game-high four assists.

As a team, Corban shot 13-for-57 (22.8%) from the field and 12-for-18 (66.7%) at the free throw line. Meanwhile, George Fox was 26-for-61 (42.6%) from the field and 16-for-27 (59.3%) at the charity stripe.

Corban will return to the hardwood on Friday, November 20th, against NCAA Division III member Pacific Lutheran beginning at 4:30 p.m. in Tacoma, Washington.
