ASHLAND, Ore. – Thanks to four players scoring in double figures led by sophomore
Katie Steigleman's 21 points on 7-for-17 shooting from the field, Corban's women's basketball team upset the NAIA's No. 9-ranked Raiders of Southern Oregon, 82-71, Thursday night inside McNeal Pavilion.
With tonight's victory over a nationally-ranked team, Corban improves to 6-10 overall and 2-3 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. Meanwhile, Southern Oregon falls to 13-4 overall and 2-4 in conference action.
Along with Steigleman, three other Warriors – freshman
Emily Tsugawa (Gladstone, Ore.), junior
Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.), and senior
Monique Tribble (Coquille, Ore.) – added 15, 14, and 10 points respectively to round out Corban's double-digit scorers. On the boards, Steigleman pulled down a team-leading and game-high tying nine rebounds to go along with a game-high five assists and two steals.
In the opening half, Southern Oregon grabbed a five-point lead (9-4) following a Jacki Speer free throw with just under 16 minutes remaining. Over the next 15-plus minutes, Corban used a 27-12 run en route to grabbing a 10-point advantage (31-21) thanks to a Miller three-pointer with 1:36 showing on the clock. The visiting Warriors would settle for a seven-point halftime advantage (31-24) after SOU's Gabe Johnson connected on three unanswered free throws over the final minute of the opening half.
The second half belonged to Corban over the opening 10 minutes, as the Warriors secured a game-high 17-point lead (56-39) after a jumper by junior
Ashlee Jensen (Yuba City, Calif.) with 11:07 left in the game. Southern Oregon would get as close as four points (73-69) after a pair of Speer free throws with 1:18 showing on the clock. Unfortunately for the host Raiders, free throw shooting and timely defense down the stretch by Corban would lead to the final margin of 11 points (82-71) thanks to a 9-for-10 performance at the charity stripe by the Warriors over the game's final 78 seconds.
Southern Oregon was led by Speer's game-high 26 points on 6-for-13 shooting from the field to go along with a 14-for-21 performance at the free throw line. Speer was aided scoring-wise by Johnson's 15 points and Ashley Baker's nine-point performance. On the glass, Speer pulled down a game-high tying nine rebounds, while Johnson registered a game-high five steals.
As a team, Corban shot 30-for-57 (52.6%) from the field that included a scorching 17-for-24 (70.8%) performance over the game's final twenty minutes. The visiting Warriors were also 6-for-15 (40.0%) from behind the three-point line and 16-for-19 (84.2%) at the free throw line. On the other hand, Southern Oregon was 19-for-53 (35.8%) from the field, 3-for-10 (30.0%) from long distance, and 30-for-43 (69.8%) at the charity stripe.
Corban will return to the court on Saturday, January 2nd, when the Warriors continue their three-game road trip with a non-conference match up against California Pacific Conference members Simpson beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Redding, California.
