BOX SCORE
FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Freshman
Tess Bennett (Sutherlin, Ore.) scored a career-high 20 points on 9-for-12 shooting from the field to go along with a game-high tying nine rebounds, but it was not enough as Corban's women's basketball team fell to NCAA Division III member Pacific, 87-73, Saturday evening inside the Pacific Athletic Center.
With the loss, Corban falls to 2-8 overall. Meanwhile, Pacific evens its record at 2-2 after picking up its second straight victory over a Cascade Collegiate Conference member.
Bennett, who registered a career-high 17 points earlier this season against Pacific Lutheran, led a trio of Warriors in double figures that included a pair of sophomores –
Becky Buhler (Clackamas, Ore.) and
Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) – who scored 18 and 14 points respectively. The second-year Warrior duo was a combined 12-for-24 from the field, as Buhler came off the bench and connected on 8-of-14 shots that included netting Corban's only two three-point buckets of the night. Meanwhile, Steigleman was 5-for-10 from the field and turned in a 4-for-5 performance at the free throw line.
Following the sixth tie of the game in the opening half at 21-21, Corban used a 7-2 run to grab its largest lead of the game (28-23) following a Buhler jumper with 8:19 remaining in the first half. Unfortunately, Pacific would use a 20-14 run to close out the opening twenty minutes en route to grabbing a slim one-point lead (43-42) at the half thanks to a free throw by Rochell Reeves-Howe.
The second half would be all Boxers, as Pacific extended its slim halftime lead to a game-high 22 points (80-58) following a Paige Jensen lay-in with 5:12 left in the game. Corban would cut Pacific's lead by eight points when the final buzzer sounded for the final margin of 14 (87-73), as Bennett scored the game's last two points via a pair of free throws.
Pacific had five players in double figures led by Reeves-Howe's game-high 24 points on 9-for-19 shooting from the field. Meanwhile, a quartet of Boxers – Julianne Erbe, Jensen, Erica Schultz, and Brittany Anderson – tallied 19, 13, 12, and 11 points respectively. Jensen also grabbed a game-high tying nine rebounds, while Anderson and Erbe added 8 and 7 rebounds respectively.
As a team, Corban shot 29-for-62 (46.8%) from the field to go along with a 2-for-14 (14.3%) showing from three-point range and a 13-for-17 (76.5%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Pacific was 35-for-70 (50.0%) from the field, 4-for-13 (30.8%) from long distance, and 13-for-19 (68.4%) from the charity stripe.
Corban will return to the court on Tuesday, December 8th, when they travel down Highway 22 to take on cross town rival and NCAA Division III member Willamette beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside the Sparks Center in Salem.
