SALEM, Ore. – A trio of Warriors that included junior
Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.), sophomore
Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.), and freshman
Emily Tsugawa (Gladstone, Ore.) combined to score 50 points, as Corban's women's basketball team defeated cross town rival and NCAA Division III member Willamette, 70-61, Tuesday night inside Cone Field House.
With tonight's win, Corban improves to 3-8 overall and snaps a three-game losing streak in the process. Meanwhile, Willamette falls to 2-5 overall with two more non-conference games left against Cascade Collegiate Conference opponents on its 2009-10 schedule.
Steigleman led the Warriors in scoring with a game-high tying 22 points on 7-for-21 shooting from the field to go along with an 8-for-11 performance at the free throw line. Meanwhile, Miller added 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field and a game-high 10 rebounds. Rounding out the trio, Tsugawa continues to impress during her first season of collegiate competition with the best all-around game thanks to 11 points, a game-high seven assists, and five rebounds.
In the opening half, Willamette built an early five-point lead (15-10) following a three-pointer by Maya McFaddin with 11:23 remaining. Corban would use a 10-2 run over the a span of 3:23 en route to gaining a three-point advantage (20-17) after a jumper by sophomore
Kira Lyon (Salem, Ore.) with exactly eight minutes showing on the clock. The host Bearcats would grab the lead once again and push their lead to four points (30-26) thanks to another trifecta by McFaddin with 2:29 left in the opening half. Corban would cut Willamette's halftime lead to a manageable deficit following a jumper by Tsugawa that knotted the score at 30-all with 64 ticks showing on the clock. Unfortunately, a jumper by the Bearcats' Nicki Clowdsley would hand Willamette a slim two-point lead (32-30) heading into the locker room.
The second half would belong to Corban, as the visiting Warriors used an opening 8-0 run that resulted in a six-point lead (38-32) thanks to a three-pointer by sophomore
Becky Buhler (Clackamas, Ore.) with 17:20 remaining in the game. Corban would push its lead to as much as 11 points (55-44) after a Miller lay-in with 9:29 showing on the clock before Willamette used a 12-4 run that cut the difference to three points (59-56) with just over four minutes left. Facing another possible loss, Corban stepped to the free throw line a sealed the victory with a combined 8-for-10 performance over the final four-plus minutes en route to capturing the much-needed nine-point win (70-61).
Willamette was led by Alex Zennan's game-high tying 22 points on 9-for-22 shooting, while McFaddin and Kaileigh Westermann added 12 and 8 points respectively. Westermann would pull down a team-high nine rebounds, while Zennan chipped in with six rebounds and six assists in 39 minutes of action.
As a team, Corban shot 25-for-65 (38.5%) from the field to go along with a 2-for-10 (20.0%) showing from three-point distance and an 18-for-24 (75.0%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Willamette was 21-for-53 (39.6%) from the field, 6-for-15 (40.0%) from long distance, and 13-for-16 (81.3%) at the charity stripe.
The Warriors will return to the hardwood on Saturday, December 12th, when they host the Redhawks of Simpson University beginning at 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
