Macnab & Long Balls Help Warriors Split With Rival Cavaliers of Concordia

BOX SCORES – GAME #1 | GAME #2

SALEM, Ore.
– Freshman Quinn Macnab (The Dalles, Ore.) pitched his first collegiate complete game with a game-high seven strikeouts to go along with a pair of home runs by senior Craig Spicer (Vancouver, Wash.) and sophomore Trevor Winsor (Troutdale, Ore.) in Game #1, as Corban's baseball team split an afternoon double header with Concordia, 6-2 & 1-2 in 8 innings, Saturday at Warrior Field.

Looking to snap an 11-game losing streak, as well as pick up its first win at home, Corban came out ready to do battle in the opening inning thanks to a two-out solo home run off the bat of Spicer that sailed over the left field wall to give the host Warriors an early 1-0 lead.

Despite allowing a Cavalier hit in the second inning, the host Warriors put another two runs on the board in their half of the second off a pair of hits. Sophomore Kyle Taylor (Clackamas, Ore.) led off with a double to left center before advancing to third on a wild pitch. The very next batter – sophomore Taylor Stiles (Santa Maria, Calif.) – reached base via a Concordia fielding error that allowed Taylor to score Corban's second run of the game. Two batters later, junior Matt Schmidt (Corvallis, Ore.) came home with the Warriors' third run of the opener thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore Nate Hiebert (Lebanon, Ore.) that put Corban up 3-0.

Neither team scored again until the bottom of the sixth inning when Corban added three more runs to its total via four hits. Schmidt led off with a double to left field before Winsor belted his first collegiate home run down the left field line that put Corban up by five runs (5-0). Wasting no time, Hiebert then reached via a bunt single to third before stealing second. One batter later, sophomore Tony Salamone (Medford, Ore.) singled through the left side and then advanced to second on a throwing error by the Cavaliers' catcher that allowed Hiebert to score the Warriors' final run of the game.

Macnab looked in control until the top of the ninth inning when Concordia scored two runs on four hits with the runs coming home via a pair of run-scoring singles off the bat of Chris Jamie and Brennan Ingram. With the bases loaded, the first-year Warrior right-hander got the game's final out on a fly out to center field that handed Corban its first win since beating Concordia, 5-3, in Wilsonville almost one month ago.

Winsor led the Warriors' bat-attack with a 3-for-4 performance that included one run scored and two RBI in the opener, while Salamone added two hits as part of Corban's 11-hit effort. Macnab went the distance on the hill allowing two unearned runs on six hits to go along with his career-high effort in strikeouts.

Concordia got a team-leading 2-for-4 performance from Kyle Schneider, while Steven Taft went the opening 5.1 innings for the Cavaliers allowing six runs (five earned) on 10 hits before turning the ball over to reliever Ian Miller for the game's final 2.2 innings.

In the finale, a pitcher's dual ensued between Corban's Winsor and Concordia's Ben Rue over the first two innings.

The game's opening run was scored by the visiting Cavaliers in the top of the third when Jimmy Rudig singled to right field allowing Cameron Baker to score after he opened the inning reaching base via a Warrior error.

In the bottom of the fourth, Corban knotted the game at 1-all when Salamone singled through the left side to open the frame and then came around to score three batters later on Stiles' single back through the box.

From that point on, the pitcher's dual between Winsor and Rue continued sending the game into extra innings.

In the top of the eighth inning, Concordia got a lead-off single to left field by Baker, who then advanced to second on a fielding error by Corban's left fielder. Baker then moved up to third on a fielder's choice bunt by Schneider, as the Warriors attempted to throw out the lead runner at third but threw the ball into the dirt. During the Cavaliers' next at-bat, Schneider took off for second and on the attempted throw by Corban's catcher, Baker came home on a delayed double steal for the eventual game-winning run.

The Cavaliers' Rue remained on the hill in the bottom of the eighth inning and got Corban in order to pick up his third victory of the season and secure the twin bill split for the road team by one run (2-1).

Spicer led Corban's offense with a 2-for-4 performance, while Winsor went the distance on the mound allowing a pair of unearned runs on six hits with three K's.

Concordia got a 2-for-4 performance with two runs scored from Baker, while Rue went all 8.0 innings allowing one earned run on five hits with a game-high four strikeouts.

With today's results, Corban is now 10-26 overall, 8-16 in NAIA West play. Meanwhile, Concordia finds itself at 16-25 overall, 11-17 in NAIA West action. The Warriors are back in action on Tuesday, April 14th, when they take on NCAA Division III member Pacific University of Oregon in a non-conference double header beginning at 5:00 p.m. in Forest Grove.
