BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – Corban's women's basketball takes a three-game winning streak into the New Year thanks to a commanding 75-55 win over Southern Oregon behind a game-high 21 points by junior
Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) Friday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Along with the aforementioned winning streak, Corban has also won the past three meetings against Southern Oregon dating back to the opening round of the 2009 playoffs when the Raiders ended the Warriors' season in Ashland. Since that point, the Warriors have outscored SOU by a combined 34 points in the three meetings.
Steigleman led four Warriors in double figures, as junior
Becky Buhler (Clackamas, Ore.), sophomore
Emily Tsugawa (Gladstone, Ore.), and senior
Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.) chipped in with 19, 11, and 10 points respectively. Corban's leading scorer also pulled down a game-high tying 10 rebounds, while Miller turned in a nine-rebound effort to go along with Tsugawa's game-high 10 assists.
Southern Oregon would begin the game on a 5-4 run within the first four-plus minutes before Corban used a 17-6 run over a span of five-plus minutes en route to grabbing a 10-point lead (21-11) thanks to a Steigleman three-pointer with just under 11 minutes showing on the clock. The host Warriors would hold their lead and then extend it to 12 points (31-19) at halftime thanks to a Steigleman lay-in that capped the opening twenty minutes scoring.
Over the opening two-plus minutes of the second half, Corban increased its lead to 17 points (38-21) thanks to a Buhler jumper with 17:38 left. Unfortunately, Southern Oregon began to catch fire from outside as the visiting Raiders cut Corban's lead to two points (40-38) after three straight free throw by Lindsey Scheffler with just under 14 to play. The host Warriors would extend their lead back to 17 points (60-43) thanks to a 20-6 run that was capitalized by a Buhler jumper with 8:55 remaining. Corban would hold its lead and never relinquished less than an 11-point lead before settling for its 20-point win (75-55).
Southern Oregon was led in scoring by Jamie Roupp with 15 points, while Whitney Scott tallied 10 points all in the second half. Roupp and Krystal Smith grabbed a game-high tying 10 rebounds each for the Raiders, while Celonna Arrington handed out a team-best four assists for SOU.
As a team, Corban shot a combined 32-for-68 (47.1%) from the field to go along with a 7-for-17 (41.2%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Southern Oregon was a combined 21-for-72 (29.2%) from the field, 4-for-27 (14.8%) from long distance, and 9-for-15 (60.0%) at the charity stripe.
With the win, Corban improves to 9-6 overall and 4-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Southern Oregon falls to 9-8 overall and evens its league record at 3-3. The Warriors will return to the hardwood on Monday, January 3rd, in an exhibition contest against NCAA Division I member Portland State beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Rose City.
