BOX SCORE

McMINNVILLE, Ore.
– Sophomore Jonathan Ramirez (New Britain, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and fellow sophomore Steven Blum (Salem, Ore.) went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in, as Corban's baseball team picked up its second win on Day #2 of the Jim Doran Auto Classic thanks to a 9-6 victory over Puget Sound Saturday at Roy Helser Field.

With today's result, Corban improves to 6-4 overall and Puget Sounds drops to 2-3 this season.

Along with Ramirez and Blum, junior Steven Candelaria (Farmington, N.M.) also recorded more than one hit with a 2-for-4 performance that included a pair of runs scored. Meanwhile, five other Warriors – junior Trevor Winsor (Troutdale, Ore.), junior Kyle Taylor (Clackamas, Ore.), junior Taylor Wyatt (Dallas, Ore.), freshman Kris Bos (Jerome, Idaho), and freshman Marc Labarthe (Salem, Ore.) – all registered one hit each, while Wyatt drove in two runs for Corban.

On the mound, freshman Craig Baker (Meridian, Idaho) went the opening 7.0 innings allowing two earned runs on five hits to go along with a game-high seven strikeouts. Sophomore Quinn Macnab (The Dalles, Ore.) closed out the final 2.0 innings allowing four earned runs on four hits.

After a scoreless opening three innings, Puget Sound got on the board first with a RBI single through the right side before Corban took the lead in its at-bat thanks to a two-run double to left field by Wyatt that scored Ramirez and Candelaria. At the conclusion of four innings, Corban had a one-run lead (2-1).

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Corban exploded for five runs that included a solo home run to right field by Winsor – his second of the day – and a three-run shot to left field to batters later by Ramirez. The Warriors' other run came on a single by Bos that scored Taylor and handed Corban a 7-1 lead.

Puget Sound would get one run back in the top of the sixth via a lead off home run before Corban tacked two more runs on the board via a two-run single up the middle by Blum that plated Warner and Labarthe for a seven-run Warrior lead (9-2).

The game's final four runs came in Puget Sound's final two at-bats, as the Loggers got two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth on Jarvis Nohara's second home run of the game. Fortunately for Corban, its lead was large enough that the defense held and the Warriors came away with another win (9-6).

Nohara led Puget Sound's offensive attack with a 3-for-5 performance with three runs scored and three RBI, while Matt Cox turned in a 2-for-3 showing with a run scored. On the hill, James Lane went the opening 5.0 innings for UPS allowing seven runs (five earned) on eight hits before turning the ball over to a pair of Logger relievers for the final three innings.

Corban will return to the diamond tomorrow night – February 28th – for the final game of the 2010 Jim Doran Auto Classic against Pacific Lutheran with the first pitch scheduled to be thrown at 6:00 p.m. at Roy Helser Field on the campus of Linfield College.
