MEDFORD, Ore. – In its first double header of the 2010 season, Corban's baseball team used four home runs and timely defense in a sweep over the Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech, 12-10 & 6-3, Saturday afternoon at U.S. Cellular Field.
In picking up its first wins of the season, Corban improves to 2-1 overall while Oregon Tech falls to 2-6 this season.
Sophomore
Steven Candelaria (Farmington, N.M.) went a combined 5-for-9 at the plate with three runs batted in and one run score, while three Warriors – senior
Josh Warner (Independence, Ore.), sophomore
Steven Blum (Salem, Ore.), and freshman
Kris Bos (Jerome, Idaho) – all hit home runs in the Warriors' double header sweep.
Game #1 - Corban 12, Oregon Tech 10 (10 innings)
Corban wasted no time in getting on the score board in the opener, as Warner led off the game with a solo home run that put the visiting Warriors up early.
Unfortunately, Corban's lead would not last long as Oregon Tech's Colin Stock blasted a two-run home run that was sandwiched between a pair of OIT runners scoring on throws home after Owl hits.
Corban would pull within a single run (4-3) following a two-run double by junior
Tyler Lake (Medford, Ore.) in the top of the second inning before the visiting Warriors re-took the lead (5-4) with a two-run third inning. Back-to-back doubles by Blum and Candelaria knotted the game at 4-all before freshman
Kyle Kunkel (Bremerton, Wash.) registered a sacrifice fly that allowed Candelaria to score the go-ahead run.
Oregon Tech would re-take the lead in the bottom of the third inning when Mitch Garcia registered a two-run double that scored Stock and Zach Earle.
After loading the bases in the top of the fourth inning, Corban tied the score once again via a fielder's choice RBI by junior
Kyle Taylor (Clackamas, Ore.) that scored sophomore
Jonathan Ramirez (New Britain, Conn.) for the Warriors' sixth run of the game.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Oregon Tech would score two more run to take a two-run lead (8-6) following run-scoring singles by Kory Locken and Stock.
For the fifth straight inning, Corban plated a run when Bos belted his first collegiate home run – a three-run blast – that also scored both Warner and freshman
Marc Labarthe (Salem, Ore.). Two batters later, Canderlaria drove home his second RBI of the game via a double that plated junior pinch runner
Luke Balbas (Boise, Idaho) to make the score 10-8 in favor of Corban.
After a scoreless three innings, Oregon Tech came up in its final at-bat trailing by two runs and got back-to-back run-scoring hits off the bats of pinch hitter Kevin Conway and Cory Staniforth to tie things at 10-10 and send the game into extra innings.
In the top of the 10th inning, Corban loaded the bases for the second time and got an eventual game-winning fielder's choice RBI from Taylor that plated Ramirez. One batter later, Balbas stepped to the plate and roped a run-scoring single that brought home Taylor for the final run of the game.
Despite a two-out single by Stock, Oregon Tech could not cross the plate as Corban picked up its first win of the season, 12-10, in come-from-behind fashion.
Nine Warriors recorded at least one hit led by Candelaria's 4-for-5 performance, while Bos drove home a team-leading three runs. Junior
Trevor Winsor (Troutdale, Ore.) started the game on the mound for the Warriors and went the opening 3.1 innings allowing eight earned runs on seven hits to go along with a game-high tying six strikeouts before turning the ball over to sophomore
Tyler Doornink (Yakima, Wash.). The second-year Warrior would go the next 5.0 innings allowing two earned runs on seven hits before junior
Nate Hiebert (Lebanon, Ore.) would toe the rubber for the final 1.2 innings. In picking up the victory, Hiebert would pitch a scoreless five outs allowing a mere one hit to go along with one strikeout.
Oregon Tech was led by Stock and Staniforth, who registered three hits each to go along with Stock's game-high tying three RBI. On the mound, three Owl pitchers would combined to pitch the game allowing 12 runs (10 earned) on 14 hits.
Game #2 - Corban 6, Oregon Tech 3
The night cap would begin with Corban scoring four unanswered runs that included a run-scoring double down the left field line by Candelaria in the first inning before Blum crushed a three-run home run in the third inning that made the score 4-0 in favor of the visiting Warriors.
Oregon Tech would cut Corban's lead in half (4-2) with a pair of run-scoring hits in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Staniforth and Kealii Ribao each registered RBI singles.
In the top of the eighth inning, Blum would register his second home run of the afternoon via a solo shot that helped the second-year Warrior single-handedly outscored the Owls' offense (4-3) in the finale.
Corban would capped its scoring in the top of the ninth inning when Labarthe brought home junior
Taylor Wyatt (Dallas, Ore.) with a RBI single to make the score 6-2 in favor of the Warriors.
Oregon Tech would close out the day's scoring when Ryson Mauricio drove home Kyle Connor with a RBI single for the final tally of 6-3.
Blum would lead the Warriors' bat-attack with a 2-for-3 performance in Game #2 that included four RBI and two runs scored, while six other Corban hitters would register one hit each. Freshman
Jacob Kopra (Gresham, Ore.) would pitch the opening 7.0 innings for the Warriors allowing two earned runs on six hits to go along with a game-high five strikeouts. Sophomore
Mike McKay (Almira, Wash.) and freshman
Craig Baker (Meridian, Idaho) would close out the game for the Warriors, as the duo combined to pitch the final 2.0 innings allowing one earned run on three hits.
Oregon Tech was led offensively by Staniforth, who went 3-for-4 at the plate with one run batted in. Meanwhile, Frank Charlton went the opening 7.0 innings for the Owls allowing four earned runs on five hits before turning the ball over to a pair of OIT relievers for the final two innings.
Corban will return to the diamond on Friday, February 12th, against the NAIA's No. 6-ranked Lewis-Clark State in the second game of the Regence BlueShield of Idaho Tournament with the first pitch scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at Harris Field in Lewiston, Idaho.
