PORTLAND, Ore. – For the first time all season, Corban's women's basketball team swept a conference weekend thanks to game-highs of 22 points and eight rebounds by sophomore
Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) in the Warriors' 60-54 victory over nationally-ranked Warner Pacific Saturday night inside C.C. Perry Gymnasium.
With its second straight win, Corban improves to 11-16 overall and 6-9 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Warner Pacific falls to 14-9 overall and 9-5 in league action.
Steigleman, who shot 8-for-12 from the field that included a 3-for-4 showing from beyond the three-point arc, was helped out scoring-wise by freshman
Tess Bennett (Sutherlin, Ore.) and a pair of Warriors – sophomore
Becky Buhler (Clackamas, Ore.) and freshman
Emily Tsugawa (Gladstone, Ore.) – who scored 14, 8, and 8 points respectively. On the boards, Steigleman was aided by Bennett and senior
Monique Tribble (Coquille, Ore.) with six rebounds apiece.
After the score was knotted at 4-4 just over four minutes into the game, Corban used a 12-0 run en route to securing a 16-4 lead following a lay-in by Tsugawa with 12:38 remaining. The visiting Warriors would push their lead to as much as 14 points (22-8) thanks to a Steigleman jumper with 9:23 to go. Warner Pacific would pull within four points (22-18) thanks to a 10-0 run that was capped via a Shayla Fetters lay-in with 3:54 left. Corban would then push its lead to nine points (29-20) following a Buhler three-pointer with 83 seconds on the clock before settling for a half time advantage of eight points (31-23).
In the second half, Corban would continue to hold the lead until Warner Pacific's Kelsey Mattsen connected on a jumper that gave the host Knights a one-point lead (46-45) with just over eight minutes left in the game. The visiting Warriors would regain the lead (50-49) thanks to a Bennett jumper with 6:07 left and never relinquish the advantage thanks to a game-closing 10-5 run for the six-point win (60-54).
Warner Pacific was led in scoring by Kristina Schumacher, who tallied 13 points on 5-for-12 shooting from the field to go along with Mattsen's 11-point effort. On the boards, Marissa Towry pulled down a team-leading six rebounds to go along with a pair of Knights' – Cameryn Calhoun and Katie Harris – team-high two assists.
As a team, Corban shot 21-for-53 (39.6%) from the field to go along with a 5-for-15 (33.3%) showing from three-point range and a 13-for-18 (72.2%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Warner Pacific was 21-for-57 (36.8%) from the field, 2-for-14 (14.3%) from long distance, and 10-for-21 (47.6%) at the charity stripe.
Corban will return to the court on Friday, February 12th, when the Warriors host the nationally-ranked Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
NOTE: Friday night will Corban's third annual
Pink Zone Night, as the Warriors will work in conjunction with the American Cancer Society in helping raise awareness about breast cancer. Fans are encouraged to come dressed in pink and help support the cause.
