Warner Nearly Hits For Cycle in Final Home Game

BOX SCORE

McMINNVILLE, Ore.
– Senior Josh Warner (Independence, Ore.) came up one hit shy of the cycle thanks to a 3-for-4 performance that included a single, double, and home run Tuesday on Senior Recognition Day, but it was not enough as Corban's baseball team fell to the NAIA's No. 1-ranked Lewis-Clark State, 9-3, at Roy Helser Field.

After having today's series finale moved to Linfield College due to weather, Corban came away with a win-loss record of 11-32 compared to Lewis-Clark State's 36-3 mark this season.

Playing in his final home game as a Warrior, Warner did not disappoint the Warrior FAN-atics thanks to a run-scoring single in the third inning before registering his second home run of the season in the seventh inning en route to accounting for two of Corban's three runs on the afternoon.

Along with Warner, junior Luke Balbas (Boise, Idaho) and sophomore Steven Blum (Salem, Ore.) each went 2-for-3 at the plate to go along with junior Taylor Wyatt's (Dallas, Ore.) perfect 1-for-1 showing off the bench and sophomore Jonathan Ramirez's (New Britain, Conn.) single to lead off the bottom of the first.

Freshman Jake Balbas (Meridian, Idaho) would pitch the opening 5.0 innings for Corban allowing seven earned runs on seven hits before turning the ball over to a quarter of Warrior relievers – freshman David Hull (Kelso, Wash.), sophomore Tyler Doornink (Yakima, Wash.), freshman Caleb Virtue (Vancouver, Wash.), and sophomore Mike McKay (Almira, Wash.). The quartet would combine to allow two earned runs on seven hits with a pair of K's.

Corban would score first taking its lone lead of the series in the second inning when Warner registered a RBI single to left field with the bases loaded that allowed junior Kyle Taylor (Clackamas, Ore.) to score for the Warriors' early 1-0 lead.

Lewis-Clark State would waste no time taking the lead for good in the top of the fourth inning when Danny Anguiano roped a two-run single up the middle that brought home pinch runner Connor Moore and Kawika Emsley-Pai for a 2-1 LCSC lead.

The visiting Warriors would put four runs on the board in the top of the fifth inning that included Emsley-Pai's first home run of the season via a two-run shot over the right field wall for the final runs of the frame that resulted in a five-run lead (6-1).

Lewis-Clark State would add another run in the top of the sixth inning on Brian Burke's RBI double down the left field line that scored Anguiano and extended LCSC's lead to six runs (7-1).

Corban would gets its second run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning when Warner led off with a solo home run down the left field line to bring the Warriors within five runs (7-2). The fourth-year Warrior would pull within a triple of the cycle and was the only Corban player with more than one extra base hit on the afternoon.

In the top of the eighth, Lewis-Clark State ended its scoring via a two-run home run by Jake Eccles that eluded Corban's freshman left fielder Kyle Kunkel (Bremerton, Wash.) as he jumped and attempted to rob the home run. Unfortunately, Eccles' hit landed on the other side of the fence and made the score 9-2 in favor of the visiting Warriors.

Corban would close out the game's scoring in the bottom of the eighth when Wyatt roped a run-scoring double to left center that allowed Luke Balbas to score for the final tally of 9-3.

Lewis-Clark State was led offensively by Burke, Emsley-Pai, and Anguiano, who all registered three hits on the afternoon to go along with a pair of RBI each by Eccles, Emsley-Pai, and Anguiano. LCSC's Kyle Cruickshank would go the opening 5.0 innings allowing one earned run on six hits before turning the ball over to a trio of Warrior relievers.

Corban will return to the diamond on Friday, April 23rd, for an afternoon double header against the NAIA's No. 22-ranked Coyotes of The College of Idaho beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Caldwell, Idaho.
