Warriors Fall in Heart-Breaker Against Linfield

BOX SCORE

McMINNVILLE, Ore.
– Despite a goal in the second minute by junior Gus Bermudez (Culver City, Calif.), Corban's men's soccer team fell victim to a goal by the host Wildcats with 13 seconds remaining in the second overtime en route to a heart-breaking 2-1 loss at the hands of NCAA Division III member Linfield Friday night under the lights at the Linfield Soccer Field.

With 13 seconds remaining in the second overtime period, Linfield's Kevin Donato fired off a shot that found the back of the goal in the 110th minute therefore ending a hard-fought game for both sides.

Corban controlled the offensive flow thanks to 25 shots, but were unable to cash in any goals over the final 108 minutes of action that allowed Linfield to steal the key non-conference victory.

Bermudez got the Warriors on the board in the second minute after leaking past the last line of Linfield defenders via a pass from fellow junior Thomas Brempong (Kumasi, Ghana) before slipping a shot past the Wildcats' goalkeeper.

From that point on, Linfield's defense was able to hold off numerous Corban attacks. The Wildcats' goalkeeper, Cody Tipton, made numerous athletic plays throughout the night finishing with a game-high 12 saves.

The Warriors kept the heat on during the first half, attempting nine shots, five of which coming in a 10-second span just minutes following Bermudez's score.

With little to be excited about on the offensive side of the ball, Linfield got a stroke of luck in the 56th minute when a Corban defender was called for a handball in the box therefore resulting in a PK goal by the Wildcats' Carter Elhabbassi that tied the score at one.

The Wildcats appeared to have the go-ahead score in the 66th minute when Danny Snelgrow scored on a rebounded Tyler Repic shot attempt. Fortunately for the Warriors, the goal was called off and the game continued.

Linfield have multiple chances in the middle of the second half to take the lead. Separated by less than two minutes, Repic and Michel Camacho had shots sail just over the crossbar.

Corban provided Linfield a scare in the 106th minute when Brempong missed a shot in front of the goal. The Wildcats would take advantage just over three minutes later, scoring in the game's final seconds Donato's goal.

Freshman goalkeeper James Myrvold (Sandy, Ore.) would register a career and season-high 11 saves with another save coming via a Warrior defender. Bermudez would fire a game-high 10 shots, including five on-goal, but could not capitalize on anything after his initial shot of the evening.

With tonight's result, Corban falls to 1-2-1 overall and Linfield improves to 1-1-1 this season. The Warriors will take a week off before stepping back onto the field in its conference opener against Cascade Collegiate Conference rival Northwest Christian, who is coached by former Warrior player and assistant coach Brett Bentley, on Friday, September 17th, beginning at 2:30 p.m. on Warrior Field.
