BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – Junior
Gus Bermudez (Culver City, Calif.) teamed with fellow junior
Ruben Lopez (Keizer, Ore.) on his first goal as a Warrior Saturday, but it was not enough as Corban's men's soccer team fell to Frontier Conference member Rocky Mountain, 2-1, on Warrior Field.
Bermudez got the scoring started in the 28th minute when he received a through ball behind the Battlin' Bears' defense from Lopez before beating Rocky Mountain's keeper with a shot into the upper right corner of the goal. The first-year Warriors' first shot of the afternoon resulted in his first goal of the season, while he unleashed a team-high four shots over the course of the game.
Corban would cling to its one-goal lead over the next 30-plus minutes until Rocky Mountain's duo of Oliver Gore and Nick Hefferman teamed for a pair of goals within 15 seconds of each other. Gore would begin the Bears' scoring with a flick past Corban's keeper after Hefferman set up the play with a free kick from 20 yards out. Less than 15 seconds later, the aforementioned duo teamed up again as Hefferman sent a through ball behind the Warriors' defense that found Gore's foot as he deposited the shot into the lower right corner for the eventual game-winner.
In a hard-fought and physical game that saw 35 fouls called, Corban was able to get just one shot off in the second half compared to Rocky Mountain's 12 over the final 45 minutes of play.
Freshman goalkeeper
James Myrvold (Sandy, Ore.) stood between the pipes for all 90 minutes and registered a game-high nine saves for Corban, while Chris Perez needed to make only three saves en route to picking up the win for the Battlin' Bears.
With today's result, Corban falls to 0-1-1 on the season and Rocky Mountain improves to 3-1 overall. The Warriors will be back in action on Wednesday, September 8th, when they host Walla Walla University beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Warrior Field.
