Warriors Land Second Straight Win With Sweep

BOX SCORE

SALEM, Ore. – Senior Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.) and junior Chandra Baskoro (Gresham, Ore.) combine for 23 kills, as Corban's women's volleyball team pushed its winning streak to two matches with a three-set sweep, 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-18), Saturday over Warner Pacific inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

"Tonight's win was good," said head coach Nels Norquist. "I know that the girls were tired and Warner Pacific is tough because they did a lot of balls and make you earn your kills."

Land would lead all players with 13 kills, while Baskoro added 10 to go along with a pair of five-kill performances by freshmen Claire Bailey (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and Kayla Ping (Springfield, Ore.). Senior Megan Dees (Tehachapi, Calif.) and freshman Katherine Salness (Portland, Ore.) ran the Warriors' offense with a combined 35 assists, while sophomore libero Bethany Durre (Bend, Ore.) anchored Corban's defense with a match-high 13 digs to go along with a three-block performance at the net by Land.

The opening set would be a back-and-forth battle, as neither team grabbed more than a two point lead until Corban used a 4-0 run to earn a 23-19 lead following a Dees service ace. Unfortunately, the host Warriors could not keep Warner Pacific at bay as the Knights used a 4-1 run to pull within a single point (24-23). Not wanting to go extra play, Corban ended Set #1 on a Land kill for the two-point win (25-23).

Set #2 saw Corban jump out to a four-point lead (10-6) thanks to a Warner Pacific service error. Not wanting to go quietly into the night, Warner Pacific battled back with a 7-3 run to knot the set at 13-13 on a bad set by the host Warriors. Corban would never give the visiting Knights to lead, as the Warriors pushed their advantage to four points (20-16) on a Warner Pacific hitting error that forced a timeout. Corban would close out the set thanks to back-to-back kills by freshman Rebecca Shafer (Brea, Calif.) for a five-point win (25-20).

The third and final set featured Corban jumping out to a quick five-point lead (7-2) before Warner Pacific battled back via an 8-3 run to tie things at 10-all. The host Warriors would continue to hold the lead, as Corban push the difference to as much as five points (22-17) before concluding the match on a Land service ace for the three-set victory (25-18).

Warner Pacific was led offensively by Kelsey Kurtz with seven kills and a match-high 24 assists, while Brie Schau, Kim Mulka, and Carly Barker added six kills each. Defensively, Shayla Dahl and Jacalyn Chew-Dorsey anchored the Knights with 11 digs each to go along with a five-block showing by Barker.

With tonight's win, Corban improves to 10-11 overall and 4-9 in Cascade Collegiate Confernece play. Meanwhile, Warner Pacific falls to 2-12 overall and 1-12 in CCC matches. The Warriors will return to action on Friday, October 21st, against the NAIA's No. 16-ranked Raiders of Southern Oregon beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Ashland.
