Opening Day Ends Against Cavs of Concordia

BOX SCORE

LEWISTON, Idaho – Corban's baseball team ended the opening day of its 2011 season with an 8-1 loss against fellow Cascade Collegiate Conference member Concordia in Game #4 of the Red Lion Tournament at Harris Field on the campus of Lewis-Clark State College.

Despite a 2-for-4 performance by sophomore Matt Hamlin (Hamilton, Mt.), as well as a hit each by sophomore Andy Hill (Eugene, Ore.), junior Jared Fritz (Ridgefield, Wash.), junior Steven Blum (Salem, Ore.), junior Nick Stiltner (Eugene, Ore.), and sophomore Alex Bost, Corban could not overcome a six-run opening at-bat for Concordia.

The Warriors' lone run came in the top of the eighth inning when freshman Sage Poland (Spokane, Wash.) drew a two-out walk before back-to-back singles to right field by Blum and Bost put Corban on the board with its lone run of the game.

On the mound, senior Nate Hiebert (Lebanon, Ore.) went the opening 2.0 innings allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits before giving way to a trio of relievers – senior Chris Trammell (Salem, Ore.), freshman Justin White (Pleasant Hill, Ore.), and junior Mike McKay (Almira, Wash.) – for the final 6.0 innings. The three pitchers combined to allow two unearned runs on five hits.

Concordia was led offensively by three players – Riley Tubbs, Seam Myrom, and Tommy Whalen – with two hits each, while Josh O'Gorman went the opening 7.0 innings allowing zero runs on four hits with a game-high seven strikeouts.

With today's result, Corban falls to 0-2 and Concordia improves to 2-1 on the young season. The Warriors continue play tomorrow – Saturday, February 12th – at the Red Lion Tournament against The College of Idaho beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Harris Field.
