Warriors Led by Kunkel Out Hit Ranked 'Yotes

BOX SCORE

LEWISTON, Idaho – Despite out hitting the NAIA's No. 21-ranked Coyotes of The College of Idaho, Corban's baseball team could not overcome a three-run ninth inning en route to dropping its third straight game at the Red Lion Tournament, 7-2, Saturday at Harris Field on the campus of Lewis-Clark State College.

Three Warriors – sophomore Kyle Kunkel (Bremerton, Wash.), sophomore Kris Bos (Jerome, Idaho), and freshman Sage Poland (Spokane, Wash.) – each registered a pair of hits led by Kunkel's 2-for-4 performance with a run scored and an RBI. Sophomore Andy Hill (Eugene, Ore.) drove in Corban's other run with a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the third inning.

The College of Idaho struck first in the opening inning via a single up the middle by Kyle Douglas that scored Tanner Hodges following a Warrior throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt.

Two innings later, Corban got on the board with its first run to tie the score at 1-1. Kunkel would lead things off with a one out triple to right field before Poland reached on a wild pitch before senior Nate Hiebert (Lebanon, Ore.) loaded the bases via a walk. Hill would then draw the Warriors' second straight walk to bring home Kunkel and put Corban on the board.

Unfortunately the game would not remain tied for very long, as The College of Idaho plated three runs in the top of the fourth inning with the dagger coming off the bat of Douglas via a two-run double to left field that scored Hodges and Jordan Lanman to make the score 4-1 in favor of the Coyotes.

Corban would pull within two runs (4-2) in the bottom of the sixth when Kunkel drove home Bos with a single to center field following Bos's lead off single through the middle.

The score would remain a two-run difference until the top of the ninth inning when The College of Idaho got a two-out, two-run single to right field by Jesse Dodd that blew the game open and extended the 'Yotes' lead to five runs (7-2).

Pitching-wise for Corban, junior Nick Stiltner (Eugene, Ore.) went the opening 3.2 innings allowing three runs (one earned) on one hit before turning the ball over to a trio of relievers – senior Trevor Winsor (Troutdale, Ore.), junior Colby Sokol (Puyallup, Wash.), and senior Chris Trammell (Salem, Ore.) – that combined to allow four runs (three earned) on eight hits.

Douglas would lead The College of Idaho's offense with a 3-for-5 performance that included three runs batted in, while Kyle Davis went 2-for-5 at the plate. On the mound, Joshua Orr went the opening 6.0 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits before turning the ball over to Mitch Dame for the final 3.0 innings and the save.

With today's result, Corban falls to 0-3 and The College of Idaho improves to 1-2 on the young season. The Warriors will close out play at the 2011 Red Lion Tournament tomorrow – Sunday, February 13th – against tournament-host Lewis-Clark State beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Harris Field in Lewiston, Idaho.
