Day #1 of CCC-NWC Challenge Ends Versus GFU

BOX SCORE

WILSONVILLE, Ore.
 – Junior Tyler Doornink (Yakima, Wash.) pitched a near perfect 5.2 innings of relief and freshman Joshua Walker (Oregon City, Ore.) belted his first home run of the season, but it was not enough as Corban's baseball team closed out Day #1 of the Cascade-Northwest Challenge with a 5-2 loss to George Fox Saturday at Wilsonville High School.

Doornink, who was the third pitcher for Corban, came in with one out in the top of the fourth inning and proceeded to hold the unbeaten Bruins scoreless allowing just one hit with one walk to go along with a team-high five strikeouts. Meanwhile, Walker accounted for Corban's only two runs with his first collegiate home run via a two-run bomb in the bottom of the seventh inning that cleared the right field fence.

Five Warriors – Walker, junior Jared Fritz (Ridgefield, Wash.), junior Jonathan Ramirez (New Britain, Conn.), sophomore Kris Bos (Jerome, Idaho), and freshman Sage Poland (Spokane, Wash.) – registered hits in the night cap, while senior Trevor Winsor (Troutdale, Ore.), junior Colby Sokol (Puyallup, Wash.), and Doornink appeared on the mound for Corban. Winsor would go the opening 2.0 innings allowing four earned runs on six hits before turning the ball over to Sokol for 1.1 innings of work. The junior lefty allowed one earned run on three hits before Doornink came in to shut down George Fox's offense.

George Fox would score all five of its runs in the first four innings, as the Bruins registered a single run in the first, third, and fourth innings to go along with a two-spot in the top of the second.

Corban would get on the board via Walker's four-bagger in the bottom of the seventh inning, but could not get any closer thanks to stellar pitching by the Bruins' Brian Randa.

GFU was led offensively by Taylor Hunter's 3-for-4 performance, while Eric Gantenbein and Carl Mason each registered two hits for the Bruins. Randa would go the distance for George Fox allowing two earned runs on five hits with a game-high 11 K's.

With tonight's result, Corban remains winless and George Fox is unbeaten in six games to start the season for both teams. The Warrior will close out play at the 1st annual Cascade-Northwest Challenge tomorrow – Sunday, February 20th – against Pacific University of Oregon beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Field #2 at Wilsonville High School.
