Comeback Falls Short Against Boxers of Pacific

BOX SCORE

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – After falling behind by five runs, Corban's baseball team attempted a ninth-inning comeback against NCAA Division III member Pacific University of Oregon before falling to the host Boxers, 5-3, Tuesday at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.

Junior Jared Fritz (Ridgefield, Wash.) would lead the Warriors' offensive attack with a 2-for-4 performance that included a run scored, while six other Corban players – senior Kyle Taylor (Clackamas, Ore.), junior Steven Blum (Salem, Ore.), junior Colby Sokol (Puyallup, Wash.), sophomore Andy Hill (Eugene, Ore.), sophomore Alex Bost (San Jose, Calif.), and freshman Lance Foster (Snohomish, Wash.) – also collected a hit. On the mound, junior Tyler Doornink (Yakima, Wash.) went the opening 5.0 innings allowing three earned runs on five hits before turning the ball over to senior Nate Hiebert (Lebanon, Ore.) for the final 3.0 innings of relief work.

Pacific would strike first in its opening at-bat scoring two runs thanks to a RBI double to center field by Nate Rasmussen, as the host Boxers took an early 2-0 lead after one inning of play.

The home team would put another run on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Conor Clark drive in Jared Van Hoon would a ground out to second base that pushed Pacific's lead to three runs (3-0).

Pacific would add a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning when Anson Arakaki drove in Rylan Tomita with a single to left field before Van Hoon scored on a wild pitch during the Boxers' next at-bat for the final runs for the home team that held a 5-0 lead through eight innings.

In the top of the ninth, Corban's bats final came alive thanks to a pinch hit double to center field by Foster that brought Fritz home for the Warriors' first run of the evening. The very next batter – freshman Sage Poland (Spokane, Wash.) – would bring Hill home with a ground out to pull Corban within three runs (5-2). With Foster on third base, senior Trevor Winsor (Troutdale, Ore.) capped the game's scoring with a sacrifice fly to center field for the final tally of 5-3 in favor of Pacific.

Pacific was led offensively by Van Hoon, who went 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs scored. Pitching-wise for the Boxers, Chad Fahey went the opening 6.0 innings allowing zero runs on four hits to go along with a game-high 14 strikeouts. Fahey would turn the ball over to a pair of Pacific reliever – Rasmussen and Dan Wolfe – for the final three innings, as the duo combined to allow three runs (one earned) on four hits.

With tonight's result, Corban sees its record drop to 0-8 and Pacific improves to 4-3 on the season. The Warriors will return to the diamond on Friday, February 25th, against the NAIA's No. 4-ranked Warriors of Lewis-Clark State in a scheduled noon double header at home.

NOTE: With the numerous weather reports that call for anywhere from 2-4 inches of snow to fall in the Willamette Valley over the next 48 hours, first-year head coach Jeff McKay and Corban's athletic administration will have to make a call as to when and where this weekend's four-game series against L-C State will be played.
