Steven Blum (Salem, Ore.) hit two home runs, senior
Trevor Winsor (Troutdale, Ore.) pitched seven solid innings in the opener, and freshman
Lance Foster (Snohomish, Wash.) scored the winning run in the finale, as Corban's baseball team picked up its first wins this season via an afternoon sweep of Oregon Tech, 8-5 & 9-8, Saturday at Harry & David Field.
Blum went a combined 5-for-11 at the plate with two home runs, four runs scored, and four RBI on the afternoon, while Corban's 12th inning, game-winning heroics would result in a sweep over Oregon Tech.
Foster would begin the afternoon's final inning with a single up the middle before coming home two batters later on a bunt by senior
Kyle Taylor (Clackamas, Ore.) that was thrown away for Oregon Tech's pitcher allowing Foster to score therefore ending the extra-inning affair.
GAME #1 – CORBAN 8, OREGON TECH 5
The opening game would begin with Corban scoring eight unanswered runs beginning in the first inning, as senior
Nate Hiebert (Lebanon, Ore.) and sophomore
Kris Bos (Jerome, Idaho) both roped singles before Blum stepped to the plate and cranked his first home run of the season via a three-run blast over the left field fence for an early 3-0 Warrior lead.
Three innings later, Corban added another three runs via a two-run single up the middle by senior
Tyler Lake (Medford, Ore.) before freshman
Sage Poland (Spokane, Wash.) came home two batters later on an error that increased the Warriors' lead to 6-0.
Corban would add another run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Blum came home on an error by OIT's first baseman that extended the home team's lead to seven runs (7-0).
The Warriors would close out their scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning when Hiebert brought home Poland with a single to center field that made the score 8-0.
Oregon Tech would attempt to mount a comeback in the top of the eighth inning, but it was too little, too late for the Owls despite five runs on four hits with the highlight coming via a run-scoring triple off the bat of Phil Sacks.
Corban would get two hits in the opener from Hiebert and Lake, while Blum drove in three runs to go along with Lake's two-RBI performance. On the mound, Winsor pitched the opening 7.0 innings allowing two earned runs on six hits before turning the ball over to junior
Colby Sokol (Puyallup, Wash.) and senior
Chris Trammell (Salem, Ore.). Sokol would get two outs in the eighth before Trammell came on to close out the game en route to earning his first career save.
OIT was led offensively by Sacks with a pair of hits, while Darryl Swearingen went the opening 4.0 innings allowing six runs (four earned) on five hits before turning the ball over to a trio of relievers.
GAME #2 – CORBAN 9, OREGON TECH 8 (12 INNINGS)
In the series finale, Corban would get on the board first via Blum's second home run of the afternoon – a solo shot over the right field fence – that put the Warriors up 1-0.
Oregon Tech would score single runs in the third and fifth innings to take a 2-1 lead before Corban tied the game at 2-all in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a OIT fielding error that allowed Taylor to score from second.
The visiting Owls would score five runs in the top of the seventh inning en route to taking a 7-2 lead with the highlight coming via a two-run single down the right field line by Matt Bellando.
In its next-to-last at-bat, Corban would put together a five-run comeback that began with a home run to right field by freshman
Joshua Walker (Oregon City, Ore.). Sokol and junior
Jonathan Ramirez (New Britain, Conn.) would then register run-scoring hits before Taylor tied the game with a two-run infield single that brought home Ramirez and Foster.
Neither team would score in the ninth inning, as the series finale was forced to go to extra innings.
In the 10th inning, Oregon Tech took a one-run lead (8-7) thanks to a Sacks' single to right field before Corban tied the score once again in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a single down the right field line by Taylor that plated sophomore
Andy Hill (Eugene, Ore.) and tied the score at 8-all.
The 11th inning would once again leave both teams without a run, as the game was extended to the 12th inning where Corban's aforementioned game-winning heroics happened.
Blum and Foster both went 4-for-6 at the plate, while Taylor turned in a three-hit, three-RBI showing for Corban. Hiebert pitched the opening 6.0 innings for Corban allowing five earned runs on eight hits before sophomore
David Hull (Kelso, Wash.) and Trammell combined to pitch the final six innings. Trammell would pick up his first collegiate win, as he pitched the final 4.0 innings allowing just one earned run on one OIT hit.
Oregon Tech was led offensively by five different Owls that collected two hits each, while Bellando drove in two runs. On the mound, Neil Emerson went the opening 7.0 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits before Zack O'Hanen and Zack Earle pitched the final four innings with Earle suffering the heart-breaking loss for the visiting Owls.
With today's results, Corban improves to 2-13 on the season and Oregon Tech falls to 7-15 this year. The Warriors will return to the diamond on Tuesday, March 15th, against NCAA Division III member Lewis & Clark beginning at 4:00 p.m. in Portland.
