BOX SCORES – GAME #1 | GAME #2
CALDWELL, Idaho – After taking a week off from NAIA West action, Corban's baseball team returned to the diamond against the NAIA's No. 21-ranked Coyotes of The College of Idaho and fell in both games, 14-5 & 8-2, Friday at Wolfe Field.
Eleven different players collected at least one hit for the visiting Warriors with senior
Trevor Winsor (Troutdale, Ore.), junior
Steven Blum (Salem, Ore.), and freshman
Sage Poland (Spokane, Wash.) registering two hits each on the afternoon. Blum and sophomore
Kris Bos (Jerome, Idaho) would drive in a pair of RBI each in the opener, while sophomore
Andy Hill (Eugene, Ore.) brought home Corban's lone two runs in the finale.
GAME #1 – COLLEGE OF IDAHO 14, CORBAN 5
In the opener, Corban took an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Blum drove home a pair of runners via a single up the middle before Bos registered a two-run single two batters later that pushed the visiting Warriors' early advantage to four runs.
The College of Idaho would cut into Corban's lead in the bottom of the first inning, as the host Coyotes put three runs on the board thanks to a fielder's choice RBI by Kyle Douglas before Cody Spencer drew a bases loaded walk that made the score 4-3.
In the top of the second, The College of Idaho would add two more runs via a run-scoring triple by Izaac Garsez before Gavin Gamboa singled back to the pitcher allowing Garsez to score the Coyotes' fifth run of the game.
The College of Idaho would get the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the third inning via a home run to left field off the bat of Jordan Lanman that made the score 6-4 in favor of the home team.
Corban would pull within a single run (6-5) in the top of the fourth inning when Winsor scored on a pass ball following his lead off single to left field. Unfortunately that would be as close as the visiting Warriors would get, as The College of Idaho put eight runs on the board over its next five at-bats en route to securing the nine-run victory (14-5).
Nine different Warriors registered a hit each, as Blum and Bos each drove in two runs. On the mound, sophomore
Jacob Kopra (Gresham, Ore.) went the opening 1.1 innings allowing five runs (two earned) on four hits before turning the ball over to the bullpen that consisted of a three juniors –
Tyler Doornink (Yakima, Wash.),
Colby Sokol (Puyallup, Wash.), and
Quinn Macnab (The Dalles, Ore.) – that combined to allow nine runs (four earned) on nine hits.
The College of Idaho was led offensively by Garsez and Jarel Lewis with two hits each, while Jesse Vermillion went the opening inning allowing four earned runs on five hits before turning the ball over to Bobby Wassman for the final 8.0 innings.
GAME #2 – COLLEGE OF IDAHO 8, CORBAN 2
In the finale, Corban scored the first two runs with single scores in the top of the second and fourth innings on a pair of RBI hits by Hill. The first-year Warrior brought home the game's opening run on a Coyote error before capping the visiting team's scoring via a single up the middle in the top of the fourth inning that made the score 2-0 in favor of Corban.
The College of Idaho would get one run back in the bottom of the fifth inning on a ground out RBI by Douglas before the host Coyotes put seven runs on the board one inning later with the highlights coming off the bats of Douglas via a two-run double and Lanman on a two-run home run down the left field line that capped the game's scoring and gave COI a six-run victory (8-2).
Corban would get hits from five different players with Hill registering both of the Warriors' RBI, while junior
Nick Stiltner (Eugene, Ore.) went the opening 5.1 innings allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits before turning the ball over to senior reliever
Chris Trammell (Salem, Ore.) for the final two outs.
C of I was led offensively by Douglas with a 1-for-3 performance that included a run scored and three RBI, while Mitch Dame went the distance allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with a game-high five strikeouts.
With today's results, Corban falls to 2-15 overall and 0-5 in NAIA West games. Meanwhile, The College of Idaho improves to 16-10 overall and 6-4 in league games. Both teams will return to the diamond tomorrow – Saturday, March 19th – for the final two games of the weekend series beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Wolfe Field in Caldwell, Idaho.
