Season-High 21 Runs Come in Win Over Rivals

BOX SCORE

SALEM, Ore. – Corban's baseball team tied a single-game record with 21 runs against cross town rival and NCAA D-III member Willamette, as the Warriors collected 21 hits en route to a 21-13 win over the Bearcats Wednesday at John Lewis Field.

This is the first time in nearly 10 seasons that Corban has scored more than 20 runs in a game, as then-Western Baptist defeated Willamette, 21-6, on March 3, 2002. In that game, the Warriors tallied 21 runs on 20 hits in seven innings of play with five WBC players registered two-or-more hits led by a pair of 4-for-6 performances by former Warriors Beau Batsell and K.C. Rumrey.

In today's non-conference game, seven different Warriors – senior Nate Hiebert (Lebanon, Ore.), senior Kyle Taylor (Clackamas, Ore.), senior Tyler Lake (Medford, Ore.), senior Aarason Perry (Susanville, Calif.), junior Steven Blum (Salem, Ore.), freshman Sage Poland (Spokane, Wash.), and freshman Joshua Walker (Oregon City, Ore.) – registered two-or-more hits led by three hits each by Taylor, Lake, and Blum. On the mound, Corban rode the arms of five different pitchers with senior Chris Trammell (Salem, Ore.) collecting his second win of the season after going the opening 3.0 innings allowing two unearned runs on four hits.

The visiting Warriors scored nine runs over the opening two innings, as freshman Lance Foster (Snohomish, Wash.) began the scoring in Corban's opening at-bat via a two-run double to center field before senior Trevor Winsor (Troutdale, Ore.) closed out the Warriors' scoring with a RBI single through the left side in the top of the second inning. Once all the dust had settled, Corban held a 9-0 lead through its first two at-bats.

Willamette would get a pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning making the score 9-2 before Corban exploded for another six runs in the top of the fourth inning with the highlight coming off the bat of Lake via his first home run of the season that plated three Warriors and extended the visiting team's lead to 13 runs (15-2).

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Willamette put five runs on the board on four hits brining the Bearcats within eight runs (15-7).

Not wanting to allow much breathing room, Corban tacked six more run on the board in the top of the fifth inning on six hits as Winsor began the scoring with a sacrifice fly before Poland capped the Warriors' scoring for the game with a two-run single to left field to put a nice 14-run cushion on Corban's lead (21-7).

Willamette would get a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning before erupting for five runs in its next-to-last at-bat, which came too little, too late for the host Bearcats as the final score read 21-13 in favor of Corban.

Tyson Giza led the Bearcats' offense that pounded out 14 hits off Warrior pitching with a 3-for-5 performance that included two runs scored and two RBI. Dylan Summers drove in a team-high three RBI for the Bearcats, while Jake Jones went the opening inning allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits en route to suffering his first loss of the season.

With today's win, Corban improves to 5-17 overall and Willamette falls to 9-12 on its season. The Warriors will return to action this weekend with a six-game series against the NAIA's No. 11-ranked British Columbia beginning on Friday, April 1st, at noon at Thunderbird Park in Vancouver, British Columbia.

NOTE: Sunday's double header is a pair of make-up games from March 5th when UBC visited Corban and were rained out in Saturday's finale.
