Warriors Fall to NAIA's No. 10-Ranked T-birds

BOX SCORES – GAME #1 | GAME #2

STAYTON, Ore. – Playing a "home game" away from Warrior Field for the second straight weekend due to weather and poor field conditions, Corban's baseball team dropped a pair of NAIA West games to the NAIA's No. 10-ranked Thunderbirds of British Columbia, 17-1 & 4-1, Friday at Stayton High School.

In the opening game, sophomore Alex Bost (San Jose, Calif.) would provide the Warriors' offensive fire power going a perfect 2-for-2 in a reserve role to go along with junior Steven Blum's (Salem, Ore.) run-scoring double in the first inning. Freshman Lance Foster (Snohomish, Wash.) would provide Corban's offense in the finale, as the left-handed batting Warrior belted his first collegiate home run in the bottom of the second.

GAME #1 – BRITISH COLUMBIA 17, CORBAN 1

After getting the nationally-ranked Thunderbirds in order to start the game, Corban came to bat and got a one-out single to right field by senior Kyle Taylor (Clackamas, Ore.) before Blum drilled a ball into the right field corner one batter later allowing Taylor to score from first for an early 1-0 Warrior lead.

Unfortunately, three costly errors in the top of the second inning would lead to four British Columbia runs that kick started the visiting Thunderbirds scoring at least one run in each of the next six innings en route to earning the victory (17-1).

UBC was led offensively by Sebastian Wong with a 5-for-6 performance from his lead off position that included a pair of runs scored and two RBI, while Nick Senior was 3-for-4 with four runs scored, four RBI, and his first home run of the season.

Senior Nate Hiebert (Lebanon, Ore.) went the opening 3.1 innings for Corban allowing seven runs (four earned) on seven hits before turning the ball over to a bullpen that included junior Quinn Macnab (The Dalles, Ore.), junior Luke Loberg (Sublimity, Ore.), senior Kyle Lamson (Medford, Ore.), sophomore Caleb Virtue (Vancouver, Wash.), freshman Justin White (Pleasant Hill, Ore.), and sophomore David Hull (Kelso, Wash.). The six relievers combined to allow 10 earned runs on 10 hits.

On the mound for British Columbia, Sheldon McDonald went the opening 5.0 innings allowing one earned run on five hits before giving way to Shawn Hetherington and David Otterman for two innings each.

GAME #2 – BRITISH COLUMBIA 4, CORBAN 1

In the finale, junior Nick Stiltner (Eugene, Ore.) had a no-hitter through 5.1 innings before British Columbia erupted for three runs in the top of the sixth inning that included a solo home run by Kevin Nickel and a two-run shot by Senior.

Foster provided Corban's lone run of Game #2 via his first collegiate home run in the bottom of the second inning, as the first-year Warrior took the third pitch that he saw over the right field wall for an early 1-0 Corban lead.

The host Warriors nearly extended their lead in both the first and fifth innings only to have great defensive plays by British Columbia keep only one run on the board for Corban. Junior Jared Fritz (Ridgefield, Wash.) had a potential lead-off home run robbed by UBC's right fielder in the bottom of the first inning, while freshman Joshua Walker (Oregon City, Ore.) had a potential run-scoring hit into the gap between left and center field robbed by a diving UBC left fielder that ended the fifth inning.

Despite being held without a hit over the opening five innings, British Columbia tied the game in the top of the fourth via a sacrifice fly before Nickel and Senior helped the visiting T-birds put the eventual game-winning runs on the board in the top of the sixth inning en route to securing its second straight win over the Warriors (4-1).

British Columbia would get hits from five different players in the finale, while Eric Brown went the distance for the Thunderbirds allowing one earned run on two hits.

Stiltner would go the opening 6.0 innings allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits for the Warriors before senior Chris Trammell (Salem, Ore.) pitched a perfect seventh inning that included one strikeout.

With today's results, Corban falls to 0-11 overall and 0-3 in NAIA West games. Meanwhile, British Columbia improved to 10-5 overall and 6-0 in league contests. The Warriors and Thunderbirds were scheduled to close out their four-game series tomorrow beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Warrior Field, but both coaching staffs decided due to the weather and unplayable field conditions that the final two games would be postponed and made up when Corban travels to Vancouver on the first weekend in April.
