BOX SCORES – GAME #1 | GAME #2
KEIZER, Ore. – Senior
Kyle Taylor (Clackamas, Ore.) went a combined 3-for-6 with two runs batted in, but it was not enough as Corban's baseball team dropped a double header to NCAA Division II member Central Washington, 5-4 and 22-2, Thursday at Volcanoes Stadium.
Along with Taylor, fellow senior
Nate Hiebert (Lebanon, Ore.) was a combined 4-for-8 with one run and one RBI to go along with a pair of three-hit performances by junior
Jonathan Ramirez (New Britain, Conn.) and senior
Trevor Winsor (Troutdale, Ore.).
GAME #1 – CENTRAL WASHINGTON 5, CORBAN 4 (10 INNINGS)
In the opener, Corban scored the opening three runs beginning in the bottom of the second inning when Ramirez and fellow junior
Jared Fritz (Ridgefield, Wash.) hit a pair of doubles to put the home team up by a single run (1-0) after two innings of play.
The Warriors would get on the board once again in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ramirez ripped a double down the right field line before Winsor singled him home with a base knock to left field increasing Corban's lead to two runs (2-0). After Winsor stole second, Fritz singled down the right field line allowing Winsor to score all the way from second base for a 3-0 Warrior lead.
In the top of the fifth inning, Central Washington would get on the board for the first time when the Wildcats plated three runs on three hits. Brett Bielec would drive in CWU's first run on a double to left center before Jimmy Ryerson registered a two-run single to left field that knotted the game at 3-3.
Two innings later, Corban scored its fourth and final run of the game when Taylor singled home sophomore
Kyle Kunkel (Bremerton, Wash.) with a single to center field making the score 4-3 in favor of the home team.
Central Washington would not allow the Warriors to hold their lead for very long, as the Wildcats tied the score once again (4-4) in the top of the eighth inning when Glen Reser grounded out with runners on second and third.
After neither team scored again in regulation, Central Washington got the game-winner in the top of the 10th inning when Reser singled to center field bringing home David Leid pushing the score to 5-4 in favor of the Wildcats.
Corban would get a lead off hit by Taylor in the bottom of the 10th inning, but could not capitalize on getting the runner home and fell by a single run in extra innings.
Taylor would lead the Warriors' offense with a 3-for-5 performance, while three other Corban players – Ramirez, Winsor, and Fritz – collected two hits each. Sophomore
Kris Bos (Jerome, Idaho) went the opening 4.2 innings for Corban allowing three earned runs on four hits, while senior
Chris Trammell (Salem, Ore.) and junior
Nick Stiltner (Eugene, Ore.) combined to throw 5.1 innings allowing a combined two runs (one earned) on six hits.
Central Washington was led offensively by Leid and Bielec with a pair of 2-for-4 performance, while Jake Millbauer went the opening 6.0 innings allowing three earned runs on eight hits with Mike Griffiths and Mike Miller combining to hold Corban to a mere one run on four hits over 4.0 innings of work.
GAME #2 – CENTRAL WASHINGTON 22, CORBAN 2
In the finale, nothing seemed to go the way of the Warriors with Central Washington scoring at least one run in each of the first six innings en route to the victory.
After the visiting Wildcats plated two runs in the top of the first inning, Corban got within a single run (2-1) when Hiebert led off with a double to right center before advancing to third on a ground out by freshman
Sage Poland (Spokane, Wash.). The very next batter – Taylor – would bring Hiebert home via a sacrifice fly to left field that plated the Warriors' first run in the night cap.
Central Washington would secure an eight-run lead (9-1) before a rain delay halted play for just over 30 minutes. Once the game resumed, Corban would get out of the inning but the Wildcats had already done enough damage.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Warriors scored another run when Hiebert registered an infield single with the bases loaded that brought Winsor home and pulled Corban within seven runs (9-2).
Over the next four innings, Central Washington added 13 more runs en route to securing its 10th win of the season.
Hiebert led Corban's offense with a 3-for-4 performance that included one run and one RBI, while sophomore
Alex Bost (San Jose, Calif.) went 2-for-3 at the plate. Six different Warrior pitchers – senior
Kyle Lamson (Medford, Ore.), sophomore
David Hull (Kelso, Wash.), junior
Mike McKay (Almira, Wash.), junior
Luke Loberg (Sublimity, Ore.), junior
Quinn Macnab (The Dalles, Ore.), and freshman
Thomas Hubbard (Springfield, Ore.) – combined to pitch the seven-inning game with Hubbard being the lone Corban hurler that did not allow a run en route to pitching a perfect seventh inning.
Central Washington was led by a perfect 4-for-4 performance by Kally Gau, while Kris Henderson drove in a game-high four runs for the visiting Wildcats. Palmer Brown went the opening 4.0 innings en route to earning the win allowing two earned runs on five hits before turning the ball over to a trio of CWU relievers.
With today's results, Corban falls to 9-29 overall and Central Washington improves to 10-22 on the season. The Warriors will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 19th, against fellow CCC member Concordia in an afternoon make-up double header beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Warrior Field in Salem.
