BOX SCORES – GAME #1 | GAME #2

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Sophomore Kris Bos (Jerome, Idaho) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the 18th inning, as Corban's baseball team upset the NAIA's No. 11-ranked British Columbia, 4-3, before dropping the finale, 0-5, Saturday at Thunderbird Park.

Five different Warriors – senior Nate Hiebert (Lebanon, Ore.), senior Kyle Taylor (Clackamas, Ore.), junior Jonathan Ramirez (New Britain, Conn.), sophomore Jake Balbas (Meridian, Idaho), and sophomore Matt Hamlin (Hamilton, Mt.) – collected two hits each on the afternoon, while Ramirez drove in a team-high two runs in the opener.

Freshman Justin White (Pleasant Hill, Ore.) began the opener going 5.0 innings before turning the ball over to senior Chris Trammell (Salem, Ore.) for 2.0 innings, junior Nick Stiltner (Eugene, Ore.) for 6.0 innings, and senior Trevor Winsor (Troutdale, Ore.) for the final 5.0 innings of work in the extra-inning game. In the night cap, sophomore David Hull (Kelso, Wash.) toed the rubber for the opening 3.0 innings before the Warriors' bullpen tandem of Trammell and junior Luke Loberg (Sublimity, Ore.) combined to pitch the final 3.0 innings.

GAME #1 – CORBAN 4, BRITISH COLUMBIA 3 (18 INNINGS)

In the longest game in Corban history, the Warriors battled through three potential game-ending situations against the nationally-ranked Thunderbirds before pulling off the biggest upset of the season so far via the one-run victory.

Prior to today, Corban played a 14-inning game against Puget Sound in which the Warriors came away with the win, 2-1, on April 15, 2005. During the 2001 season, then-Western Baptist battled fellow CCC member Concordia to a 6-6 tie when the game was halted after 15 innings of play.

British Columbia would strike quickly in the bottom of the first inning when Kevin Nickel ripped a double to left field that allowed Austin Fruson to score giving the host T-birds an early 1-0 lead.

In the top of the second inning, Bos drew a lead off walk before coming around to score on a double to left center by Ramirez that knotted the score at 1-1. One batter later, Ramirez scored the Warriors' second run on a sacrifice fly by senior Tyler Lake (Medford, Ore.) that handed the visiting team a slim one-run lead (2-1).

UBC would tie the game at 2-all in the bottom of the fourth inning when Bob Foerster lifted a sacrifice fly into center field that allowed Andrew Firth to score from third tying the game for the second time.

In the top of the sixth inning, Corban took the lead once again on a fielder's choice RBI by Ramirez that plated junior Steven Blum (Salem, Ore.) and gave the visiting Warriors a slim one-run lead (3-2).

One inning later, British Columbia would score its third run of the game on a ground out RBI by Fruson that scored Blake Carruthers and knotted the game at 3-3. Neither team would score again in regulation therefore forcing extra innings to be played.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, British Columbia had the bases loaded with one out before Stiltner got out of the jam with a pair of ground outs that forced play to continue.

One inning later, UBC would put a runner 90 feet away with one out before a infield pop out and another ground out would continue play.

Six innings later, Corban would finally put another run on the board when Hiebert registered a one-out double to right field before Taylor was hit by a pitch and Blum was intentionally walked to load the bases. The very next batter – Bos – would take one for the team earning the hit by pitch that allowed Hiebert to score from third to give the Warriors a one-run lead (4-3).

In the bottom of the 18th inning, British Columbia got a one-out single to left field by Firth before he advanced to second on a Carruthers bunt single. With runners on second and third with only one out, Winsor would get a pair of fly outs en route to Corban earning its first NAIA West win of the season and the Warriors snapped UBC's six-game winning streak in the process.

Hiebert, Taylor, and Ramirez each collected two hits for the Warriors, while Winsor earned his third win of the season throwing 5.0 innings of shut out relief with three strikeouts.

British Columbia got a 3-for-6 performance from Carruthers, while Tavis Bruce suffered the heart-breaking loss allowing one earned run in 5.0 innings of work.

GAME #2 – BRITISH COLUMBIA 5, CORBAN 0

After playing nearly four hours worth of baseball in the opener, British Columbia took just over three-and-a-half hours to pick up the victory in the finale.

The host Thunderbirds would plate two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly and a Warrior error for an early 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning, UBC would plate another two runs in similar fashion to its opening at-bat as the home team took a 4-0 lead after three complete innings of play.

British Columbia would score its fifth and final run of the finale in the bottom of the fourth inning when Sebastian Wong lifted a sacrifice fly into center field that allowed Matt Spillman to score making the closing difference five runs (5-0).

Balbas, Foster, and Hamlin would each register hits for Corban, while Hull suffered the loss allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits over the opening 3.0 innings.

UBC got a pair of 2-for-3 performances from Wong and Greg Densem, while Brandon Kaye pitched a complete game shut out allowing a mere three hits to go along with a game-high three strikeouts.

With today's results, Corban moves to 6-20 overall and 1-10 in NAIA West play. Meanwhile, British Columbia sees its record go to 19-7 overall and 15-2 in league games. These same two teams will conclude play this weekend tomorrow – Sunday, April 3rd – beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Thunderbird Park.
