LEWISTON, Idaho – Corban's baseball team closed out its six-game series with the NAIA's No. 18-ranked Lewis-Clark State Saturday at Harris Field with a pair of losses, 6-12 & 2-15, despite the Warriors snapping a 31-inning scoreless drought against their ranked opponent.
Senior
Kyle Taylor (Clackamas, Ore.) and freshman
Lance Foster (Snohomish, Wash.) registered a combined three hits on the afternoon with both players driving in three runs, while senior
Nate Hiebert (Lebanon, Ore.) also collected three hits and junior
Jonathan Ramirez (New Britain, Conn.) had two hits in the two games.
GAME #1 – LEWIS-CLARK STATE 12, CORBAN 6
In the opener, Lewis-Clark State scored the game's opening run in the bottom of the first inning when Michael Bush scored on a Trent Bridges sacrifice fly to left field to put the home team up by a single run (1-0) early.
Corban would takes its first and only lead of the weekend in the top of the third inning when Ramirez doubled to right center with one out before advancing to second on a walk by Taylor. The two runners would move up 90 feet on a wild pitch before Ramirez came home on an infield single by junior
Nick Stiltner (Eugene, Ore.) to tie the game at 1-apiece. Foster would give the Warriors the lead (2-1) on a run-scoring single that brought home Taylor for Corban's first lead against Lewis-Clark State this season.
Lewis-Clark State would quickly re-take the lead in the bottom of the third inning when Bridges connected on a two-run home run over the center field wall to put the home team up by a single run (3-2). LCSC's Brian Gaylord would add to the home team's lead with the second of back-to-back home runs that put the host Warriors up by two runs (4-2).
Eight unanswered runs would cross the plate for Lewis-Clark State until Corban attempted a late-game comeback in the top of the ninth inning, as the visiting Warriors go a run-scoring double by Taylor before a single by junior
Steven Blum (Salem, Ore.) plated Taylor to make the score 12-4. Foster would then bring home Corban's final two runs with a double to right field making the deficit six runs (12-6) before LCSC got the final out to secure its sixth win this season against the visiting Warriors.
Foster led Corban's offense with a 3-for-5 performance with three runs batted in, while Taylor and Ramirez collected two hits each. Senior
Trevor Winsor (Troutdale, Ore.) suffered the loss allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits over the opening 6.0 innings before fellow senior
Chris Trammell (Salem, Ore.) pitched the final 2.0 innings in relief.
Lewis-Clark State was led offensively by Gaylord with a 3-for-5 showing with two runs scored and two RBI, while Alfonso Casillas and Gino Casini collected two hits each for the victorious Warriors. LCSC's Cody Garner went the opening 3.0 innings allowing two earned runs on five hits before giving way to Austin Pentecost for 5.0 innings of shutout relief, as Pentecost earned his second win of the season.
GAME #2 – LEWIS-CLARK STATE 15, CORBAN 2
In the finale, Corban took an early lead in the top of the first inning when Hiebert roped a lead-off double to left field before coming around to score on Taylor's sacrifice fly to center field putting the visiting Warriors up by a single run (1-0).
Lewis-Clark State would take the lead for good in the bottom of the first inning when Casini ripped a two-run single to left center following Casillas' RBI single to right field making the score 3-1 in favor of the home Warriors.
LCSC would add another seven unanswered runs before Corban plated its second and final run of Game #2 in the top of the fifth inning when Taylor singled back to the pitcher to bring home freshman pinch runner
Joshua Walker (Oregon City, Ore.) to make the score 10-2 in favor of Lewis-Clark State.
The host Warriors would put five more runs on the scoreboard en route to settling for a 13-run victory (15-2), as Lewis-Clark State swept the season series against Corban.
Hiebert would be the only Warrior to register more than one hit, while sophomore
Kris Bos (Jerome, Idaho) went the opening 1.2 innings allowing five earned runs on nine hits before giving way to junior
Mike McKay (Almira, Wash.) and sophomore
Caleb Virtue (Vancouver, Wash.) for the final 4.1 innings of work.
Lewis-Clark State got a perfect 3-for-3 performance from Casini, while three other Warriors also registered three hits in the finale. LCSC's Jorge Sanchez went the opening 4.0 innings allowing one earned run on four hits en route to earning the win, while Zach Arneson and Carsen Nylund combined to pitch 3.0 innings of relief.
With today's results, Corban falls to 9-37 overall and 4-23 in NAIA West play. Meanwhile, Lewis-Clark State improves to 30-13 overall and 19-8 in league games. The Warriors will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 26th, against cross town rival and NCAA Division III member Willamette in a single nine-inning game starting at 4:00 p.m. on Warrior Field in Salem.
NOTE: Prior to the first pitch Tuesday against the Bearcats, Corban will honor its seven seniors for their dedication to the program during their careers donning the navy and gold.
