Final Weekend Begins Against Rival Concordia

BOX SCORES – GAME #1 | GAME #2

PORTLAND, Ore. – Corban's baseball team opened its final weekend of the season against conference rival Concordia, as the Warriors dropped both games, 10-0 & 1-0, Friday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field on the campus of the University of Portland.

Junior Jonathan Ramirez (New Britain, Conn.) and sophomore Kyle Kunkel (Bremerton, Wash.) collected a combined two hits on the afternoon, while senior Trevor Winsor (Troutdale, Ore.) struck out a game-high nine batters in just 6.0 innings in Game #1.

GAME #1 – CONCORDIA 10, CORBAN 0

In the opener, Concordia scored the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the first inning before adding nine more runs in a span of four innings that included a four-run bottom of the seventh inning.

Senior Nate Hiebert (Lebanon, Ore.) would lead off the game with a single to left field, while the other two Warrior hits came via an infield single in the top of the second inning by Ramirez before Kunkel led off the third inning with another infield single.

Concordia's pitching staff would shut down Corban's bats for the remainder of the game, as three Cavalier pitchers – Tyson Kisselburg, Jon Collier, and Shayne Nakata – combined to allow a mere three hits with seven combined K's.

Winsor would lead a Corban pitching staff that included sophomores Caleb Virtue (Vancouver, Wash.) and David Hull (Kelso, Wash.), as the third-year Warrior allowed six runs (four earned) on 10 hits and struck out a game-high nine Cavalier hitters.

Offensively, Concordia was led by Sean Myrom with a 3-for-5 performance that included three runs batted in, while Jared Young also added a three-hit showing.

GAME #2 – CONCORDIA 1, CORBAN 0

The finale would turn into a pitching dual between Corban junior Nick Stiltner (Eugene, Ore.) and Concordia's Mitch Ludtk, as neither team scored until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Cavaliers loaded the bases with one out before earning the walk-off win via a pass ball by the Warriors' catcher.

Corban would get back-to-back hits in the top of the third inning by senior Tyler Lake (Medford, Ore.) and Kunkel before Ramirez registered the Warriors' final hit in the top of the sixth inning via a single to left field. Unfortunately, neither of Corban's runners would cross the plate to set up the Cavaliers' heroics in the final inning.

The bottom of the seventh inning would begin with a single through the left side by Riley Tubbs before he advanced to second on a wild pitch. Following an intentional walk to Tommy Whalen, Mike Cero was hit by a pitch to load the bases. During the next at-bat, Tubbs would come home with the game-winning run on a pass ball that ended the game and afternoon for both teams.

Lake, Kunkel, and Ramirez would be the only Warriors to record hits, while Stiltner allowed one unearned run on five hits with five strikeouts.

Concordia was led offensively by Young with a 2-for-3 performance, while Ludtk allowed a mere three hits with a game-high 10 K's.

Following today's results, Corban falls to 9-40 overall and 4-24 in NAIA West play. Meanwhile, Concordia improves to 15-29 overall and 8-22 in league games. Both teams will conclude the regular season on Sunday, May 1st, with an afternoon double header beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Joe Etzel Field on the campus of the University of Portland.
