Warriors Close Out Season Against Rival Cavs

PORTLAND, Ore. – Corban's baseball team concluded its season Sunday with a pair of losses against conference rival Concordia, 8-6 & 6-2, as senior Nate Hiebert (Lebanon, Ore.) went a perfect 3-for-3 in the opener before fellow senior Trevor Winsor (Troutdale, Ore.) collected two hits in the finale at Joe Etzel Field on the campus of the University of Portland.

Along with the aforementioned seniors, junior Steven Blum (Salem, Ore.) collected a combined three hits to go along with two-hit performances by junior Jonathan Ramirez (New Britain, Conn.) and freshman Brandon Hubbard (Springfield, Ore.).

Following the end of the season for Corban, the Warriors closed out first-year head coach Jeff McKay's inaugural season at the helm with a win-loss record of 9-42 that included a NAIA West record fo 4-27. On the other hand, Concordia closed out its 2011 regular season with an overall record of 17-29 and 10-22 in NAIA West games.

GAME #1 – CONCORDIA 8, CORBAN 6

In the opener, Concordia scored the opening eight runs with a three spot in the first inning, four more in the second inning, and a single run in the fifth inning.

Corban would put three runs on the board in the top of the sixth inning, as senior Kyle Taylor (Clackamas, Ore.) scored the Warriors' opening run on a wild pitch before freshman Sage Poland (Spokane, Wash.) was hit by a pitch three batters later allowing Ramirez to score. Corban's final run would come via a run-scoring single through the right side by Hiebert to pull the Warriors within five runs (8-3).

The Warriors would add another run in the top of the eighth inning when Poland roped a single through the right side allowing fellow freshman Joshua Walker (Oregon City, Ore.) to score after he was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.

After pulling within four runs (8-4), Corban added two more runs in the top of the ninth inning when Blum singled up the middle to bring home Hubbard following his lead off double down the left field line. One batter later, Winsor drove home Blum on a groundout for the final run of the game pulling Corban within two runs (8-6).

Hiebert would lead the Warriors' offense with a perfect 3-for-3 showing, while Blum and Hubbard collected a pair of two-hit performances. On the mound, Hiebert would start the game going the opening 2.0 innings allowing seven runs (four earned) on six hits before turning the ball over to a trio of Corban relievers – sophomore Jake Balbas (Meridian, Idaho), senior Chris Trammell (Salem, Ore.), and senior Kyle Lamson (Medford, Ore.) – that combined to allow one earned run on six Concordia hits.

Jared Young and Mike Cero led the Cavaliers' offense with a pair of three-hit performances, while Josh O'Gorman went the opening 8.0 innings allowing four earned runs on six hits before allowing Jon Collier to record the final three outs in the win.

GAME #2 – CONCORDIA 6, CORBAN 2

In the finale, Concordia would score four runs in the bottom of the first inning before Corban added two runs in the top of the second inning on a two-run single by Walker that pulled the visiting Warriors within two runs (4-2).

Corban would only register four more hits over the final five inning, while Concordia added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the final score of 6-2 in favor of the home Cavaliers.

Winsor would led the Warriors' offense with a 2-for-3 performance, while five other Corban players – Blum, Ramirez, Walker, sophomore Kris Bos (Jerome, Idaho), and sophomore Alex Bost (San Jose, Calif.) – recorded a hit each. Freshman Justin White (Pleasant Hill, Ore.) went the opening 4.2 innings for the Warriors allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits before Trammell closed out the season and his career with a 1.1-inning performance against Concordia.

Odie Hollingshed led the Cavaliers' bat-attack with a 2-for-4 performance that included one run scored and two RBI, while Brett Ferguson went the distance for Concordia allowing two earned runs on seven hits.

With the season over for Corban, the Warriors will now look to the 2012 season with 26 players returning for a second season under the tuteledge of head coach McKay.
