Quartet Leads Warriors to Victory Over Wolves

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – In its first match Friday at the Melee Volleyball Tournament, Corban's women's volleyball team would get a combined 45 kills from four Warriors in the team's four-set victory over Cardinal Stritch, 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-19), inside Bross Gymnasium.

Senior Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.), junior Chandra Baskoro (Gresham, Ore.), sophomore Olivia Shropshire (Gresham, Ore.), and freshman Claire Bailey (Santa Rosa, Calif.) would register 12, 13, 10, and 10 kills respectively to lead the Warriors, while senior Megan Dees (Tehachapi, Calif.) ran Corban's offense with a match-high 31 assists. Sophomore Bethany Durre (Bend, Ore.) anchored the Warriors' defense with a match-high 15 digs, while Baskoro recorded Corban's second double-double of the season with a match-high 13 kills and 11 digs. At the net, freshman Courtney Mulford (Upland, Calif.) recorded a team-high three blocks in helping to shut down Cardinal Stritch's offense.

Despite trailing after the first set, Corban battled from behind winning the final three sets en route to collecting the hard-fought four-set win. In each of the four sets, the Warriors recorded double-digit kill totals and held the Wolves to a mere 35 kills with 27 hitting errors.

The turning point in the match came in the second set with Corban leading by two points (13-11). A bad set by Cardinal Stritch would spark a 9-0 run that gave the momentum back to the Warriors and helped them cruise the remainder of the match.

Cardinal Stritch would get eight kills each from Ashley Wipperfurth and Ashleigh Fisher, while Jacqui Zintak handed out 21 assists for the Wolves to go along with nine digs apiece by Alexys Cleaver and Gretchen Peterson.

With today's result, Corban improves to 3-1 and Cardinal Stritch falls to 1-3. The Warriors will conclude play today at the Melee Volleyball Tournament against Frontier Conference member Great Falls at 2:00 p.m. inside Bross Gymnasium in Santa Clarita, California.
