SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Newcomers
Claire Bailey (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and
Olivia Shropshire (Gresham, Ore.) helped lead Corban's women's volleyball team to a thrilling five-set victory over Hope International, 3-2 (20-25, 25-20, 25-23, 17-25, 15-11), in its final match at the Melee Volleyball Tournament Saturday inside Bross Gymnasium.
Bailey, a freshman opposite and middle blocker, registered a team-high 12 kills for Corban, while Shropshire, a sophomore outside hitter, was the only other Warrior in double figures with 10 kills. Junior
Chandra Baskoro (Gresham, Ore.) added nine kills and 12 digs, while senior
Megan Dees (Tehachapi, Calif.) handed out a team-best 19 assists to go along with a team-high 15 digs by sophomore libero
Bethany Durre (Bend, Ore.). Freshman
Katherine Salness (Portland, Ore.) recorded her first career double-double with 18 assists and 10 digs in a back-up role, while senior
Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.) controlled the net with a team and match-high six blocks.
In the opening set, Hope International jumped out to a quick eight-point lead (9-1) behind the serving of Naomi Iosia. Corban would get as close as three points (22-19) behind a kill by Baskoro before Hope International closed out the set on a 3-1 run that concluded with a Iosia kill for a five-point win (25-20).
Set #2 would see Corban jump out to an eight-point lead (11-3) thanks to a kill by Baskoro before the Warriors pushed their lead to as much as 11 points (20-9) thanks to a HIU attack error. Hope International's Iosia would bring the Royals back within 10 points (20-10) via a kill before serving HIU to within three points (20-17) thanks to a 7-0 run that included a pair of service aces. Following a HIU service error, Corban would close out the set on a 4-3 run that was capped by a combo block by freshmen
Courtney Mulford (Upland, Calif.) and
Rebecca Shafer (Brea, Calif.) for the five-point win (25-20).
A see-saw battle in the third set would see Hope International earn a six-point advantage (19-13) following a Casey Issenmann service ace before Corban used a set-closing 12-4 run to earn the much-needed and hard-fought win (25-23) after back-to-back hitting errors by HIU handed the Warriors a 2-1 lead in sets.
The fourth set was controlled by Hope International from the beginning, as the Royals quickly took a two-point lead (3-1) before extending it to an 11-point lead (22-11) and settling for an eight-point win (25-17) on another Iosia kill.
Set #5 saw Corban take a four-point lead (5-1) after back-to-back-to-back Hope International hitting errors. The Warriors would increase their lead to four points (11-7) thanks to a Mulford kill before HIU pulled to within two points (12-10). Corban would close out the match on a 3-1 run that included kills by Shropshire and Bailey for the hard-fought victory (15-11).
Hope International would get a match-high 15 kills and six service aces from Iosia, while Sine Schirmer and Kassen Boesel added 14 and 13 kills respectively. Patricia Flanagan dished out a match-high 48 assists for the Royals, while Issenmann anchored HIU's defense with a match-high 19 digs.
With today's result, Corban moves to 5-2 overall and finishes third in the final Melee Volleyball Tournament standings behind unbeaten Great Falls and tournament-host The Master's College. Meanwhile, Hope International falls to 2-7 overall finishing in a two-way tie for fourth in the final tournament standings along with fellow GSAC member San Diego Christian.
The Warriors will return to the court on Tuesday, August 30th, in their home opener against Multnomah University beginning at 5:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
