PORTLAND, Ore. – Corban's women's volleyball team opened its 2011 Cascade Collegiate Conference season with a four-set win over Warner Pacific, 3-1 (25-12, 25-16, 26-28, 25-22), Friday inside C.C. Perry Gym to extend its conference-high winning streak to four matches.
Junior
Chandra Baskoro (Gresham, Ore.) led all players with a match-high 13 kills, while sophomore
Olivia Shropshire (Gresham, Ore.) and a pair of Warriors – senior
Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.) and freshman
Rebecca Shafer (Brea, Calif.) – added 10, 9, and 9 kills respectively. Senior
Megan Dees (Tehachapi, Calif.) ran Corban's offense handing out a team-high 28 assists, while sophomore libero
Bethany Durre (Bend, Ore.) tallied a match-high 25 digs from her back row position. At the net, three different Warriors – Land, Shropshire, and freshman
Courtney Mulford (Upland, Calif.) – tallied a team-high three blocks each, while Shropshire uncorked a match-high four service aces to lead Corban's 15-ace attack.
The opening set was dominated by Corban, as the Warriors came out strong grabbing a quick eight-point advantage (9-1) behind a pair of kills by Land. Corban would continue to extend its lead to as much as 11 points (13-4) thanks to another Land kill. The visiting Warriors would hold a double-digit lead once again thanks to the serving of Shropshire, who unleashed back-to-back aces en route to giving Corban another 11-point lead (16-5). After keeping Warner Pacific at bay and leading the host Knights by 10-or-more points, Corban utilized a 3-0 run to grab a set-high 14-point lead (21-7) following a kill by Baskoro. Warner Pacific would put together a little run of its own winning three straight points that included a pair of kills by Kim Mulka to pull back within 11 points (21-10), but Corban closed out the set winning four-out-of-six points that included an opening kill Baskoro before fellow Shafer recorded back-to-back kills that resulted in the Warriors' 13-point win (25-12) to open the match.
Set #2 would see Warner Pacific jump out to a two-point lead (7-5) before Corban used a 16-7 run that resulted in an eight-point lead (21-13) following a service ace by sophomore
Alex Matulewicz (Gresham, Ore.). After a timeout by Warner Pacific, the host Knights would pull within six points (21-15) thanks to back-to-back kills before Corban used a set-closing 4-1 run that concluded with a kill by Shropshire for the nine-point victory (25-16).
In the third set, Warner Pacific jumped out to a four-point lead (10-6) after a Ellen Payne kill with the host Knights continuing to hold the lead pushing it to as much as five points (21-16). Corban would begin to claw its way back into the set using an 8-3 run that included holding off a pair of set points by Warner Pacific to knot things at 24-all thanks to a kill by Mulford. A service ace by freshman
Katherine Salness (Portland, Ore.) would give Corban its first match point (25-24), but Warner Pacific used a mini 2-0 run to grab another set point (26-25). Shafer would knot the set for the final time with a kill that made the score 26-all, as the host Knights closed out the set with back-to-back points en route to earning the win (28-26) and forcing a fourth set.
In the fourth and final set, Warner Pacific would jump out to a quick five-point lead (8-3) before Corban used a 15-10 run to knot the set at 18-18 following a service ace by Shropshire. Both teams would trade leads back and forth until the score was tied at 22-22 thanks to a Warner Pacific attack error. Another Knight error would hand Corban a one-point lead that the Warriors took advantage of thanks to a back-to-back match-closing kills by Shropshire and Land en route to securing the four-set win (25-22).
Warner Pacific was led offensively by Mulka, who tallied a team-high 12 kills to go along with a match-high 29 assists by Kelsey Kurtz. Defensively, Amanda Richards registered a team-best 20 digs for the Knights to go along with Mulka's match-high five blocks.
With tonight's victory, Corban improves to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in CCC play. Meanwhile, Warner Pacific drops to 1-1 on its young season and 0-1 in league matches. The Warriors will return to the court tomorrow – Saturday, September 3rd – against conference rival Concordia beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside Cavalier Gymnasium in Portland.
