PASCO, Wash. – For the second day in a row, Corban's baseball team had to come from behind to earn the victory using a two-run seventh inning to defeat tournament-host Whitworth, 4-3, Saturday in the Swing Into Spring College Baseball Classic at Gesa Stadium.
With today's victory, Corban improves to 2-0 for the first time since the start of the 2009 season. Meanwhile, Whitworth evens its 2012 record at 3-3.
Senior
Colby Sokol went 1-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs batted in, while four other Warriors – sophomore Daxton Deal, freshman
Marc Gallegos, freshman
Tyler Atkinson, and freshman
Jordan Johansen – all collected two hits in the victory. Senior
Tyler Doornink went the opening 7.0 innings allowing three earned runs on nine hits to get the win, while freshman
Ryan Rodriguez pitched a near perfect two innings en route to earning his second save in as many games.
Corban would open the scoring in the top of the first inning, as Gallegos led off the game with a single to centerfield before stealing second. One batter later, Atkinson ripped a single into left field that moved Gallegos to third with one out. After a wild pitch that moved Atkinson to second base, Sokol brought home Gallegos on an error by Whitworth's pitcher for an early 1-0 Warrior led.
Unfortunately, Whitworth would answer right back in the bottom of the first inning when Tyler Pfeffer double to right center to bring home Kevin Valerio to tie the game at 1-1. The very next batter – JR Jarrell – would put the Pirates up by a single run (2-1) via a ground out to second base that plated Landon Scott. Whitworth would gets its final run of the game when Justin Liu singled to right field to bring home Pfeffer for a two-run Pirate lead (3-1).
Corban would pull within a single run in the top of the fifth inning when sophomore
Gregg Romero registered an infield single that scored Deal following his leadoff single making the score 3-2 in favor of the Pirates.
Trailing by a single run with three at-bats left, Corban struck for two runs in the top of the seventh inning when Gallegos registered a two-out single to center field before advancing to second via another stolen base. Freshman pinch-hitter
Peter Martin would then tie the game at 3-3 thanks to a RBI single up the middle that brought home Gallegos for his second run of the afternoon. After a Whitworth pitching change, Atkinson roped a single to center field that moved junior pinch-runner
Kyle Kunkel to third. With two outs, Sokol ripped a run-scoring double that brought home Kunkel with the eventual game-winning run as Corban captured a one-run lead (4-3) with three Pirate at-bats remaining.
Doornink would get Whitworth's hitters in order in the bottom of the seventh inning before turning the ball over to Rodriguez for the final six outs.
Whitworth was led offensively by Pfeffer and Scott with two hits each, while Dan Scheibe went the opening 6.2 innings allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits to suffer the loss. Taylor Isadore would close out the game for the Pirates going the final 2.1 innings allowing five hits.
Corban will close out play at the Swing Into Spring College Baseball Classic tomorrow – Sunday, February 12th – with a pair of games against NCAA Division III opponents beginning at 10:00 a.m. against Lewis & Clark before capping the weekend against Puget Sound at 12:30 p.m. All games are played at Gesa Stadium in Pasco, Washington.
