Thanks to its 3-1 record this weekend, Corban's baseball team captured at least a share of the season-opening Swing Into Spring College Baseball Classic hosted by Whitworth University in Pasco, Washington.

Warriors Close Out Spring Classic With Loss to Loggers

PASCO, Wash. – In the finale of the season-opening Swing Into Spring College Baseball Classic, Corban's baseball team suffered its first loss of the year falling 7-3 to NCAA Division III member Puget Sound despite a three-hit performance by freshman Marc Gallegos Sunday at Gesa Stadium.

With today's result, Corban falls to 3-1 on the season but captures at least a share of the Swing Into Spring College Baseball Classic crown. Meanwhile, Puget Sound improves to 2-1 on the year.

Gallegos would lead Corban's offense with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate with two runs scored, while sophomore Chris Gonzales turned in a two-hit showing. Freshman Tyler Atkinson drove in two runs for the Warriors, while sophomore Lance Foster also register a RBI.

On the mound, sophomore Justin White went the opening 4.0 innings allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits before turning the ball over to a pair of Warrior relievers in senior Mike McKay and sophomore Marc Labarthe.

In the opening inning, Corban would grab a quick one-run lead when Gallegos led off the at-bat with a single to left field before moving to second on a sacrifice ground out and to third on a stolen base. Atkinson would then bring Gallegos home on a sacrifice fly to right field for an early 1-0 lead for the Warriors.

Puget Sound would tie the game in the bottom of the third inning when Paul Webster reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded allowing Andrew Yu to score the game-tying run making the score 1-1.

The Loggers would take the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth inning when Yu recorded a two-run single to center field that put Puget Sound up by two runs (3-1).

Corban would attempt to comeback in the top of the fifth inning when Gallegos led off with an infield single before coming around to score one batter later on Atkinson's ground out to second base cutting the Warriors' deficit in half (3-2).

Puget Sound would add two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a RBI single up the middle by Christopher Carter and a wild pitch that allowed Webster to score the Loggers' fifth run of the game.

In the top of the sixth inning, Corban plated its final run of the game when Foster singled through the right side to bring home Gonzales following his leadoff single to center field as the score moved to 5-3 in favor of UPS.

Puget Sound would cap the game's scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning when Eric Lund registered a run-scoring infield single before Carter ripped his second run-scoring hit of the game via a single to center field that ended the scoring at 7-3 in favor of the Loggers.

Carter and Yu would lead UPS's offense output with a pair of RBI, while David Schwartz went the opening 4.0 innings allowing one earned run on five hits before turning the ball over to a trio of Logger relievers. Logan Day would register the victory, as Puget Sound's second pitcher allowing two earned runs on four hits in two innings of work.

Corban will return to action on Saturday, February 18th, against the visiting Pioneers of Lewis & Clark beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Warrior Field in Salem.
