BOX SCORES – GAME #1 | GAME #2

PORTLAND, Ore. – Junior Jake Balbas and senior Tyler Doornink both went the distance on the mound, as Corban's baseball team picked up a double header sweep over NCAA Division III member Lewis & Clark, 8-0 and 6-5, Saturday at the Huston Sports Complex.

In a twin bill that was moved to the Rose City to the weather forecast and unplayable field conditions in Salem, Balbas threw a one-hitter in the opener before Doornink allowed five runs on five hits with a game-high four strikeouts en route to picking up his second win of the season.

Four different Warriors – senior Steven Candelaria, senior Steven Blum, sophomore Lance Foster, and freshman Marc Gallegos – each collected more than one hit on the afternoon with Gallegos leading the way with a four-hit and three-RBI effort. Blum collected three hits on the afternoon, while Candelaria had two hits with a team-high four runs batted in to go along with a two-hit performance for Foster.

GAME #1 – CORBAN 8, LEWIS & CLARK 0

In the opener, Corban would break a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning when Gallegos led off with a single before stealing second and advancing to third on a single by sophomore Gregg Romero. Freshman Tyler Atkinson would drive in the eventual game-winning run via a groundout to short that scored Gallegos for the game's first run. One batter later, freshman Peter Martin lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Romero to score before Blum came home during the very next at-bat via an error by LCC's third baseman to make the score 3-0 in favor of Corban.

Lewis & Clark would get its only highlight of the opener in the top of the fourth inning when Michael Ball registered a single for the Pioneers' lone hit of Game #1.

Following the lone bright spot for Lewis & Clark, Corban came out in the bottom of the fourth inning and added two more runs thanks to a RBI single by Gallegos and another sacrifice fly by Atkinson that made the score 5-0 in favor of the Warriors.

Corban would cap the game's scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning with three more runs thanks to a two-run single by Candelaria before Gallegos drove in his second RBI of the game on a single that scored Candelaria for the final tally of 8-0.

Gallegos would lead Corban's offense with a three-hit performance, while Balbas went the distance on the hill allowing one hit to go along with a game-high seven strikeouts.

Lewis & Clark would get its lone hit off of Ball's bat, while Mike Hathaway went the opening 5.0 innings allowing eight runs (five earned) on eight hits before turning the ball over to EJ Hand for the final three outs.

GAME #2 – CORBAN 6, LEWIS & CLARK 5

In the finale, Corban struck first with three runs in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a two-run double by Candelaria and a RBI single by Gallegos that brought home Candelaria and handed the Warriors an early 3-0 lead.

Lewis & Clark would answer with three runs in the top of the fourth inning on a two-out, three-run home run by Nick Lavin that evened the score at 3-3.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Corban took a one-run lead (4-3) via a run-scoring single by Blum that plated Foster after his one-out single and stolen base.

The Warriors would add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, as junior Kyle Kunkel scored on a LCC error before freshman Logan Mordhorst drove in the eventual game-winning run on a ground out that brought home Romero following him getting on base on the Pioneers' aforementioned miscue.

Trailing by three runs (6-3) heading into its final at-bat, Lewis & Clark was given new hope via two-out, two-run home run by Andrew Traver that pulled the Pioneers within a single run at 6-5. Fortunately for Corban, Doornink was able to get the game's final batter to ground out to end the game and give the Warriors' a one-run victory.

Foster and Blum would lead Corban's offense with two hits each, while Doornink went the distance allowing five earned runs on five hits en route to his second win of the year.

Lewis & Clark got hits from five different players, while Alex Heimbrodt went the opening 5.1 innings allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits before Kyle Tibbett came in for the final two outs.

With today's double header sweep, Corban improves to 5-1 on the season and Lewis & Clark falls to 0-6 for the year. These same two teams will meet again tomorrow – Sunday, February 19th – in a double header starting at noon at Huston Sports Complex in Portland.
